I was able to mod the case enough to put in a second HDD (cel633. It is tight, but if you need to mirror your drive for a server, it can be done. There is also a FDD rack, but no opening in the chassis or faceplate. Radio SHack has a metal nibbler that would work to cut the hole. Will look for clearance in the faceplate when I get back to the shop.

If you want pics of the dual hdd hack, let me know!

Please take pics of this!

May I ask what kind of hard drives you have installed? There is some concern that the 90W PSU in these boxes isn't really enough for two 7200RPM drives (not so much in their running state but at power-on when they have to spin up to 7200RPM).

Do you have specs on the stock hard drive in the 633? Is it the same WD 7200RPM that's in the 900MHz boxes?

I assume you have both drives on the primary IDE channel as master/slave and split the single power connector to give power to the second drive.

Are you running linux or windows on your GW500? How much uptime have you had with both hard drives installed?

Heh, sorry for so many questions, but I am very interested in your mod and how well it's working for you. If you could share pics and details I (and others I'm sure) would be much obliged!

Dan

P.S. Sorry all for my lack of participation in this group as of late. Several other projects have come to the forefront at work and I haven't had any opportunity to move forward with my plans for my GW500 boxes. I expect to be able to work on them in the coming weeks.

The original drive in the unit is a Western Ditgital WD200 5400rpm drive. The second unit which I added is a Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 8 ATA 133 7200 rpm 20gig.

Both are on the primary channel as master/slave with a power splitter. You could put a notebook drive in the floppy bracket and run it as master on channel 2 alternately!

Currently I am running the stock software until I get Win2000 server in. I have only had both drives up and running a couple of days. Everything seems to be ok so far. I will post details on the mod a little later today. I do not have a place to host the pictures currently. I could e-mail them to anyone who does have a place to host, just let me know who and where to send them to.

Bernie

OK here's the deal.

First disassemble your GW500 by removing the front panel (it is atached to the hdd bracket, they all slide out the front.) Remove the old hdd and turn it around so the connectors are to the inside of the unit instead of the outside. You will remount it later. Remove the front panel and feed the round cables through the other slotted hole in the panel behind the faceplate. The ribbon cable can't be routed through the hole because the connector is too big. If you can cut the hole larger, then route the ribbon cable through the other hole also otherwise leave it where it is. You need to drill 2 holes in the bracket above where the hdd normally mounts on the top or outside of the bracket. The 2nd drive will be mounted at right angles to the original drive with the connectors facing the rear of the unit slid to the extreme top or outside of the case. Make sure the new drive is to the outside of the case otherwise it will interfere with the pci riser card diring reassembly. You will only be able to use a small PCI card in the bottom slot due to the HDD being so close to the connector. Place the new drive in the bracket as mentioned on top of the ribbon cable and screw it down. You can only screw down one side but that should be ok. Gio ahead and remount the old hdd as mentioned above. Be careful when reassembling the unit because you can easily pinch the IDE cable and have to take the whole thing apart again to fix it. Be careful with the power connector for the original drive as it will contact the DIMM slots and the memory sticks. The IDE cable will have to be connected to the master at the end of the cable and the slave in the middle of the cable. I left the original ddrive as the master and made the new drive the slave. Even if you have them jumpered, they have to be this way or they will not be recognized.

I have some pictures to post if anyone has a way to host them.
