Wow been a long time getting this little box up. I just hadn;t had the time to play with it, but I stuck redhat fedora on it on a larger 80gig hard drive. This baby will be my file server, gateway. Hope it doesn't die....

I was thinking of use the lcd driver someone had created but I didn't need the flexibility of that, I kind of liked the GallantWeb one. It gave me the info I wanted and I liked the power of options via the lcd. SO before I moved to the new lcd drive I though I would just try grafting on the old lcd_daemon and well it works just fine, even the buttons all work.

No major news but handy to know for those of you that didn't wipe your original hd of all the gallantweb junk.

Chillieblue, can you please detail how you were able to "transplant" the LCD Driver into Redhat Fedora? Thanks in advance. :)

to get the gallantweb 500 serial lcd working with something like redhat fedora core 1 while retaining the functionality of the original gallantweb software (including front panel buttons working)... (dcarr has written an alternative lcd script but front panel buttons do not work)

i guess you need the files...
/etc/rc.d/init.d/lcd_daemon
/usr/local/gallantweb/sbin/lcd_daemon
/usr/local/gallantweb/sbin/lcd_setup

might need...
/var/lock/subsys/lcd_daemon
/etc/rc.d/init.d/functions
(can someone verify this?)

pay attention to the permissions... if you nuked the original install on the gallantweb you can just grab those files from the cd-rom inside of gallant.tar

start manually as root by issuing an /etc/rc.d/init.d/lcd_daemon

hope that helps!!!

(if someone is still looking for an gallantweb 500 server you can find them on ebay all the time and i think outpost.com still has the gallantweb 700's)

err... start lcd by issuing a...

/etc/rc.d/init.d/lcd_daemon start

to have it start automatically manually add it to a start-up script. or issue an

/sbin/chkconfig --add lcd_daemon

and to remove issue...

/sbin/chkconfig --del lcd_daemon

i think that's it... have fun

:)
