Modem

Long story short, the model isn't certified to work in the US, nor, possibly the telephone "system" components.

So be careful. Post any results you might have.

Thanks,

is the plug different? I think there is a converter to switch the the US plug. I remember I had to do that w/ my laptop modem plug when I traveled to Europe

i think it has to do with voltage ratings. not 100% sure at this point. it "should work", if not, put in a normal PCI modem. :)

I looked at the jack more closely and it looks like the one that we use here. I will check into the phone system tomorrow to see if there is anything difference between the European phone system and the US phone system. It really shouldn't be though cuz' I know people who travel using their laptop and they can connect to the work server via dialup on the laptop modem....

Well, I put the dot.bob modem in my desktop and Win98SE would not recognize it. Tried standard 56k modem drivers with no success. It is definitely *not* a 56k V.90 modem as claimed in the eBay writeup, and seems not be US-compatible.

well, since Mandrake 9.1 is alive and well in my dot.Tiger, and since the modem card is actually connected to a serial/COM port header on the motherboard, it doesn't surprise me that it didn't work in another motherboard. i imagine there aren't any IRQ or I/O signals going through the bus, just power for the lowly beast.

i'll see what AT commands respond from Linux on my box, and let you know what i find out tonight.

as for making the phone work, i presumed it was just my cable that was the problem. if you're having problems as well, it might be the US / EURO differences at work. if there's a standard AT command set available, we should be able to issue commands to properly operate on US telephone circuits. mine has a lucent/agere chip set (i believe) which likely makes it one of those select few WinModems that work successfully as LinModems. more information as i find it...

I think you're right about the serial port, keith721. I should have realized that earlier, since the iopener also has an external modem mounted in its case. I was looking at the card last night and trying to find specs on some of the chips. It almost looks like it is an external modem and sound card combination. The only reference to the card's model number (ao7611) is on an FCC page where they were notifying of issuing its certificate.

well, i switched back to Win98SE tonight, and installed the PCtel HSP modem drivers, which configured themselves as COM4, rather than COM1. the driver does talk to me via HyperTerm on COM4, and responds to basic ATI commands as:

ATI0 (zero)
56000
OK
ATI1
A97/C00 (zero zero)
OK
ATI2
OK
ATI3
PCtel 7.55MS
OK
ATI4
PCtel Data/Fax/Voice/Speakerphone/V.80
OK

the ATI5 through ATI9 commands simply returned OK.

when i attempted to dial out using ATDTnnnnnnn it said No Dialtone. Since I havent found any dialing or signal configuration commands for it, i'm going to go hunting. more info as i find it out . . .

Will the Dot.Bob work (Audio) without the modem? It appears to be just a pass thru from Modem to motherboard.
