| well, since Mandrake 9.1 is alive and well in my dot.Tiger, and since the modem card is actually connected to a serial/COM port header on the motherboard, it doesn't surprise me that it didn't work in another motherboard. i imagine there aren't any IRQ or I/O signals going through the bus, just power for the lowly beast.
i'll see what AT commands respond from Linux on my box, and let you know what i find out tonight.
as for making the phone work, i presumed it was just my cable that was the problem. if you're having problems as well, it might be the US / EURO differences at work. if there's a standard AT command set available, we should be able to issue commands to properly operate on US telephone circuits. mine has a lucent/agere chip set (i believe) which likely makes it one of those select few WinModems that work successfully as LinModems. more information as i find it...
