Received my Intel dot.station from Tiger today
A quick report on what I've discovered.

Well my dot.station arrived via UPS today. A few things that I have noticed about the unit...

1. Keyboard layout is quite different from a standard keyboard layout. From what I've seen, it's the same layout as the Spanish version. A little uncomfortable for touch typists, but still quite usable. There is also a clear removable sticker to the left of the touchpad that explains how to use it as a mouse. However, the sticker itself is in Spanish. Oh, one more thing. The mouse only has one button.
2. The HD is a Seagate ST34313A which turns out to be a 4.33G 5400RPM drive. Definitely not the 10GB drive mentioned in the Tiger ad. I e-mailed them about this, and I am awaiting their response.
3. The memory is only reporting back 64MB. I haven't removed the casing, so it could be that the unit does actually have 128Meg as advertised, but Linux may only be recognizing 64MB. (Actually, its more like 62MB as it appears 2MB is reserved for the 810 Graphics controller.) It's possible that this could be fixed by an append "mem=128MB" in lilo, but since I haven't found out how to log in as root yet, I can't experiment with this.
4. The Linux distribution comes up as Debian GNU/LInux 3.0. The kernel is 2.4.18.
5. The CRT is a decent display. I was expecting something with a dot pitch around .39 or worse, but it appears to be at least .28.

All in all, its not a bad little 'TOY'. Even if Tiger doesn't come back with an offer for the differences in their advertisement vs. actual product, I'm still satisfied with what I received. I am thinking that, while I haven't had any luck getting into the BIOS yet (I've only had it twenty minutes), the BIOS is supposed to support PXE (Pre-Execution Environment). This would mean that it should be possible to install a new OS or linux distro without having to open up the machine. Looks like I've got something to play with this weekend -grin-.

I'll try to post more information as I come across it over the next few days.

yup - mine arrived from TigerDirect today, also. like you, i haven't found the root password, yet. the clear plastic lens over the CRT was cracked on mine but the unit works fine. it doesn't appear that the phone works, unless i've got a bad cable somewhere. also, the multi-function keys across the top of the keyboard don't cause any actions, probably because the Avant AOL software interpreted these. i've got the same Seagate ST34313A disk drive, and Debian only reports 62M memory here, as well.

The toll-free number on TigerDirect's invoice is for Wintergreen PC, apparently the folks who excised (sortof) the Intel name, unlocked the BIOS, and loaded Debian. When I got home, it was too late to get anyone, but I'm going to call them back tomorrow, and see what's up with everything.

Since your BIOS seems to have been reflashed, I would be interested to hear your result of BIOS recovery and similar methods.

I tried using the INS and DEL keys at power-up to enter the BIOS, but wasn't successful. I suppose the recovery jumper has to be set to get in. I've just pulled it apart, and removed the 4.3 GB hard disk drive, and confirmed that the memory is only 64 MB. as soon as I reassemble everything with the BIOS jumper changed, I'll let you know what's in there. It does not appear to be either the P04 or P05 BIOS; from the brief glimpse I grabbed on the screen, it looks like something altogether different. If I can put a Win98SE hard disk in there, I should be able to use UniFlash to extract a copy of the BIOS.

right now, i'm going to make a backup of the Debian installation (it's in Spanish, unfortunately.) and see if I can reset the root password to my own liking...

So, if I'm reading this right the Tiger machine is just like the bOBs.

Spanish keyboard, and Spanish OS?

Well after hooking up a 'real' keyboard via the USB, I had no problems accessing the BIOS. While the Intel startup screen is displayed, simply press 'ESC' and you will see a standard PC boot screen along with Press <F2> to enter setup message. Pressing <F2> then takes you into the BIOS setup. NOTE: It appears that you MUST use the 'ESC' key press first. Pressing <F2> at the Intel startup screen has no effect. The BIOS version is the P03 version and mine was set up already to boot from USB-CDROM first and then IDE-0. So I plugged in a USB CDROM and booted up my RedHat 9 Install CD. Its installing as I type this and showing no signs of trouble. BTW, the PC boot screen did show that the unit only came with 64MB of RAM :(.

Well it went through the install of RedHat 9 ok, but it seems to have it a snag on booting into it. It's freezing up after the line 'apm: BIOS version 1.2 Flags 0x0b (Driver version 1.16)'. But while I have the setup screen before me, I wanted to get the BIOS version posted here. Also one of the BIOS options in the Boot section allows you to turn off 'Quiet Boot'. Turning this off disables the Intel Boot screen and allows you to access CMOS without hitting the 'ESC' key. Just press <F2> after setting this to disabled. One more thing that I have up under the boot options is 'Scan User Flash Area'. I haven't seen this in a BIOS before, but the help description states 'Allows BIOS to scan the Flash ROM for user binaries'. I don't plan on enabling this, as it might be that the application that locks the system to a specific ISP may already reside in the Flash ROM and this might lock me out.

I also did a little more exploring on the keyboard that came with it and could not discover a way to generate the 'ESC' key at the boot up screen. I had to use a 'real' PC keyboard to do this.

Added 'apm=off' to the kernel boot line and Red Hat 9 is now running on my Intel Dot Station. It could definitely use more memory though. Its running quite slow.

has anybody tried hooking up a FULL USB keyboard to this machine and try to hit ESC and then F2 to see if they can get into the bios? just a thought.

jkgamer:

thanks for your research

i don't have either a USB floppy or USB CD-ROM, so i couldn't possibly have accomplished what you have. i'm in the middle of preparing a Win98 hard disk for mine, which i'll have to complete tomorrow or Sunday. then, it's time to put the whole doggoned thing back together again (whoopee! <not>)

i did notice that the secondary IDE port is available on the motherboard, so adding another cable and routing it outside of the chassis somehow would enable adding an IDE CD-ROM. from his pictures, it looks like jsmmd has a CD-ROM slot in the front of his unit, or maybe it's just a pre-cut area where one was intended to go. my unit has nothing like this at all, so it would be time for Dremel surgery and power supply Y-adapters.

just ignore the rest of this, you beat me to it with your noapm post

if you can get to the LILO boot prompt, you should be able to use these boot options to skip the hardware check that's hanging you up (swiped from Knoppix' cheatcodes.txt file)

linux no{apic,agp,apm,ddc} Skip parts of HW-detection (1)
linux no{firewire,pcmcia,scsi} Skip parts of HW-detection (2)
linux no{swap,usb} Skip parts of HW-detection (3)

good luck, and keep us informed of your progress !!

TheBigDog - Yes, that is exactly what I meant by 'real' PC keyboard. I connected up my Logitech Multi-media USB keyboard, a USB 2.0 CDROM (Even though the dot station uses 1.1), and a USB optical mouse. That is how I managed to get 'inside' this thing without taking it apart :)

Keith721 - Thanks and good luck on your Win98 setup. Since I do have a USB CDROM, I am taking a different approach. I found a web site http://darkehorse.web.com that contains USB drivers for DOS. I'm going to use the drivers there to create a Win98 boot disk and copy my original Win98SE CD with that boot image on it. I then hope to be able to boot-up Win98 and install it without taking out the drive. Unfortunately, its getting late and I have to work in the morning, so I probably won't complete this now until tomorrow evening. I will post the results here.
