PXE
Preboot eXecution Environment

I read a little about this PXE, probably just enough to be dangerous.

There is a page at http://www.gctglobal.com/Download/PXE_Server/pxe_server.html that says:

"PXE (Preboot eXecution Environment) is, in one persons words, Intel's attempt at making PCs work more like SUNs. PXE outlines a protocol for enabling the BIOS to retrieve the operating system over standard network protocols.

[snip]

In the case presented in this document, PXE works like this:

The client is booted.
The BIOS portion of the client (or the Network Card firmware) makes a DHCP request.
The DHCP server responds with the usual information (IP, netmask, gateway, etc.), but in addition provides information about the location of a TFTP server.
When the client receives the information, it contacts the TFTP server asking for whatever file the DHCP server told it to ask for..."

This does sound promising. So I did a little poking around and found a TFTP server for Windows9x at http://tftpd32.jounin.net/ I built a crossover Ethernet cable (http://www.makeitsimple.com/how-to/dyi_crossover.htm ) and hooked the Dot to my desktop (running Win98SE on an Asus TUSI-M motherboard). Started TFTPD32 and turned on the Dot. The Ethernet ports on both machines showed both lights on (good connection) but the Dot booted up as normal. There are some settings on the TPTP server tab in TFTPD32 that I don't understand, so I have some more reading to do... (I've never done anything beyond Direct Cable Connection before)

Anyway, this might spark someone else to be able go farther than I've been able to.

Have you got a copy of Ethereal installed for packet sniffing and analysis? It's a lot better to look at the network traffic in terms of literal bytes and protocols. I'm no expert but once traced through rsh and rexec protocols using Ethereal.

Anyway, Jeff Mock did a complete reverse engineering of the SonicBlue/Diamond/Rio RioReceiver last year. It's an MP3 player with an ARM chip running Linux that gets downloaded over your home network. The ARM Linux package sits on your Windoze machine, and the RIO music server software loads it out to the receiver on powerup.

The gist of it is, you can probably pick up a lot of tips and ideas from looking at Jeff's work with the Rio Receiver. SonicBlue only provided one version of Windoze software, and Jeff wrote Perl scripts to do much of the same work from a Linux platform.

Give it a look :

Thanks, keith721. I'll check that out. But it's also the gateway, subnet mask, etc. that I don't know what to do with. Over the dialup it's just auto everything to set up the TCP/IP and at work IT gave me all the numbers to fill in. I've never dealt with setting up a home network, or else I might have more of a clue...

kludgemeister:

it's not too terribly tough . first thing to remember is that your home network doesn't need nearly anywhere as many individual IP addresses as even a small business would. so long as that number is less than 254, you're really working in easy territory. for such a small home network, the netmask value should be 255.255.255.0, which tells your network card to ignore all the top-most bits in the IP address, and identify different systems on your network by only the lowest group of bits. then, the IP address range is typically something like 192.168.1.1 through 192.168.1.254.

two special addresses in this range are reserved and cannot be assigned to individual systems. these are 192.168.1.0 and 192.168.1.255.

almost forgot, the gateway value is the IP address of the machine/system/router used to get to outside networks. if you're only using a crossover cable, i don't think a gateway address even comes into the equation.

there's probably some IP / Ethernet / IEEE 802.3 guys out here who can run rings around my explanation, but this should give you what you need to get started. let me know if i can help in any way...

I turned on my packet sniffer and booted up the dot.bob and saw no traffic, dhcp, bootp, or other requests from the dot.station.

I hope that I am in error. Could / has someone else please perform a similar test with a dot.bob or dot.bob2?

Hereīs my tutorial about PXE booting, and how to access windows shared folders from PXE. By now, Itīs in spanish, so youīll have to translate. All the neccesary files are included.

Of coz...itīs only for uncapped Dotstations

Just to clarify, by uncapped, you mean machines with a bios other then the original locked down version. Correct?

There was a bad file in the previous zip that prevented to boot correctly, here you can find the correct tutorial and the correct files:

http://www.vegazone.com/aol/pxevood/instalarso.htm

Still in spanish, and......unless you have something A LOT BETTER than Babelfish I donīt advise you to use automatic translation......ITīS VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY BAD......incomprehensible

Iīll try to make a more or less proper transalation as soon I have a minutes

Sounds like bootp system... it is probably looking for a specific filename on a bootp server, which DHCP can spec in it's zone info. Set up a DHCP server with a bootp server (your TFTP machine) in there and sniff the packets and see what it is looking for.

My unit is the flashed Tiger, so no PXE, I don't think.

Have I.DOT booting correctly. BootP desktop sees I.Dot fine. Not transferring file though. There's a part in the explaination when booting the I.Dot to set it to "grab" the PXE (this part I don't understand). Trying to rename file from teledata.img to boot.img see if that works.

Here is a rough translation:
1 - Equipment
a. I.Dot
b. PC with NIC. cross connect cable (just put I.Dot on your LAN)
c. BootTP (about a 2 meg download)
d. IMGEdit (you can edit boot.img or teledata.img (DOS BOOT))
e. tftpd32 - nice TFTP program
f. imaged disk from RED (MEX Telco I think) called teledata.img

2 - Download PXE.ZIP then extract to c:\tftp
3 - Install BooTP application
4 - In BooTP application under configuration/client tab put in the MAC address of your I.DOT (used a sniffer to find it)
5 - Also add boot file (MBA.PXE) and IP Address (check with TFTP as it will show assigned IP)
6 - Make template option "Ethernet DHCP"
7 - In application tftpd32 make your base directory "c:\tftp" and include all options as in pictures.
8 - Turn on your I.Dot and it should find server run MBA.PXE and download "boot.img" (you should see this happening)
9 - You can then install anything -

My results:
BootP desktop sees I.Dot fine.
Not transferring file though.

PeteC,

Which type of dot.station do you have? dot.tiger, dot.bob, dot.bob2,...? (See Device Namin Conventions)

As I stated back 04-22-2003, if I try to packet sniff. I only start to see packets with I run: connect_network, from my hacked xterm window / linux shell.

Should my dot broadcast and PXE packets on power-on / post? I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

It seems people are a bit confused about my PXE booting tutorial (probably caused by a software spanish 2 english translation), so Iīll try to have a english translation ready tomorrow. Cya.

VooD - Your tutorial is pretty straight forward. Many of us though have the Dot.Bobs which are capped though.

<jsmmd>I have an original Dot.Bob To see the PBoot packets with a sniffer just shut off your firewall DHCP (if you have that on your network). Run the application mentioned (that generates DHCP and BootP responses) on links that reponds to a DHCP reponse with a BootP and you should see the packets. Think once we can emulate the unlocker dongle USB we will be in good shape. Good luck with your wedding!

I have "translated" my PXE boot tutorial to english, but I have no web space to upload it (attached files on the spanish forum no longer works), so send me and email if you want to upload it to some place.

Btw, I repeat: THIS TUTORIAL IS FOR UNCAPPED DOTSTATION, IN ORDER TO INSTALL A NEW OS IF YOU DONīT HAVE USB CDROM , YOUR MACHINE DOESNīT BOOT AND DONīT WANT TO SWAP THE HARDDISK WITH OTHER PC.
