Hi guys, I was reading this forum since some days ago. In fact I read some posts coming from people of Spain who read my posts in an Spanish Forum, and they tried to translate them in order to give you maybe more information about how to free Intel Dot.Station machines.

I can say that I'm working in this challenge since a lot of time ago and I'm able to give you a lot of information but I still couldn't free the BIOS system.

By the way the best I can offer you, is a procedure that I wrote yesterday explaining in detail how to install Linux RedHat 8.0 over the original Intel Dot Station hard disk replacing it and obviously working at all at the end of the procedure.

I'm spanish, and this first version of the document has been written in spanish, but I know some of you are able to translate it, if not I will do it tomorrow, and I will give you and english version of it.

Pre-Installation
- Consist of make several directorie backups and copy them into other harddisk.
Installation.
- Consist of manage the partition table and make some modifications or even if you want to use a bigger hard disk you can do it replicating the 4.3 Gigabyte Original HardDisk into the other, and afterthat modifying the partition table in order to give the maximum capacity for partion hda8 which will be the biggest partition in the disk.
- Labeled of partitions (/, /boot, and so on)
- Use Lilo as boot manager during installation.
- Install RedHat 8.0 Packages.
- Finish Installation and begin Post-Installation.
Post-Installation
-Consist of modify and updates several directories and scripts.
- Also modify lilo.conf in order to boot from the old original kernel 2.2.15.
- Use the old modules drivers, modules.dep, and conf.modules in order to load all of the drivers supported by the original system.

All of those things are rightly explained in the document.

You can find it here:

Thanks everybody.

I'll come back soon.

Regards :)

Is there any chance you can modify the RedHat lilo config to boot to the MS DOS partition or does Intel bios prevent this?

---
The answer to my question is that it would seem that the bios loads the kernel. lilo changes have no effect.

Has anyone done the conversion to RedHat 8 successfully following this?

Yeah of course :) me.

It can be done. Follow the instructions, simply that.

On the other hand, answering the other question, there is no way to boot up DOS from Lilo boot. Intel BIOS doesn't allow it.

Regards.

Can anyone who has done this make available an image of the hard drive after conversion?

Has anyone had any luck with RH 9? I tried running a minimal install on my hacked dot.bob2 last night, but it hangs shortly after the APM line. I created the install on another system, so perhaps a clean install from the dot.bot2 hardware might help - but it is very strange.

Also, what are the odds of the kernel modules for supporting the LED's and other nifty features working in a "standard" Linux distro? I would assume the kernel version is important, but I'm more a FreeBSD guy than a Linux guy.

It's really important to be aware about how Intel Dot Station original AOL BIOS firmware works. What I mean is the contains of that firmware doesn't allow you to boot any linux distro or kernel because an initrd image file is included in the BIOS firmware so only the original kernel written in the original hard disk will boot.

Taking in care this information what I did with that PDF document was:

based on a Red Hat 8 Distro I changed the kernel, lilo configuration, drivers and so on, in order to do work Red Hat 8.0 with the original kernel 2.2.15 included in the Intel Dot Station bios. That's the only way to boot up that machine not using the original system. That works. Afterthat I suggest you use my own procedure and utility to flash your firmware BIOS and you will be able to use your Intel Dot Station as a Standard PC.

Cheers.

Ah - I failed to mention that I had already reflashed the BIOS with the ABAZ image before attempting to run RH 9. Of course, I installed to the target hard disk from another machine, so it is possible it might work if I initiated the install on the dot.bob2. I'll give it another go tonight, and see what happens.
