Getting back to the basics...

Getting back to the basics... I just called Bob. A while back he said he talked to Wintergreen about re-doing his machines. (Found out that they wanted to charge $40/machine to re-do them.) I spoke of the progress that has been made, etc...

I also asked/partially begged Bob to call Wintergreen and try to BUY a copy of the dongle. I figured we all would drop somewhere between $25-$50 for a dongle.

I reienforced the business and financial benefits of him having the dongle, and using his resources to do the grunt work, the ROI of having a machine that has more functionality, possible re-sale of copies of the dongle, etc...

So, he said he would make the phone call, hopefully as I type.

I'll report any news.

PS - Bob seems like "good people". Nice guy to talk to.

jon they are suppose to contact me once they decide how much they would like for the dongle will let yo now please have a great weekend thank you Bob

We might have been able to socially engineer obtaining a free copy of the dongle, but several people have made communication attempts with no real progress. This seemed to be a logical next step. If Wintergreen wants too much, then we can wait a while and start the process over.

So the question is, how much would dot.bob owners be willing to pay for a dongle, total, shipped??
(Keep in mind usb hdd's for a 8 or 16 meg. size are about $5-10.)

Is $50 too much? Please let post here.

I'd pay MAX. $50.
(That's as much as a new motherboard on ebay, and you won't have to solder a different VGA header on.)

$50 sounds fine to me.
You're right jsmmd, a new motherboard will cost at least that much because I purchased one of them. I just haven't had the time to resolder the video connector. Don't forget that the audio connector has to be redone also. I'm not the greatest one at soldering so I may wind up with a very expensive coaster if I screw up.

A question that pops into my mind is "How/where did Wintergreen get their dongle?" Might it be possible to go back one step on the food chain?

For that matter, where did Subastaspc get their dongle?

It seems to me that since the Intel contact says that all materials and code concering the Dot passed to their Spanish client (AOL), the two resellers must have gotten their dongles from AOL (or it was leaked to them unofficially...)

Where's Cigarette Smoking Man when we need him?!?

Kludgemeister (the truth is out there, but it is probably stranger than fiction...)

Between me and my friends, we have six units, so I'd be willing to pay $50 or even a bit more Once we have an image, shouldn't we be able to pass it around?

In theory, yes. One person could buy a dongle and share it with anyone...

I have 2 and $50 is reasonable to me...of course a community solution works for me. I'll share in on getting one.

Another suggestion....we start a list of people who is intersted to use the dongle to unlock their DOT. It will initially cost the first person whatever it is but each person in the list can just paypal the first person the two dollar or whatever it turns out to be (splitting among say 25 people). Then each of us is responsible for mailing the dongle to the next person, say via USPS Priority mail. And since each person will be reponsible for the mailing cost, nobody will be oweing anybody $. The last person in the list can just mail it back to the first person. And if a certain individual in the list wants to use the dongle again some time down the road, he / she can just paypal the owner the shipping cost. Since most of us will be using this as a hobby and not as a mean to make $$, I think it will work. And for those who wants to use it to make $$ (buy more DOT and resell for example), they can just get their own dongle.

That's my 2 cents. Oh, by the way, 50 bucks sounds fine. Whatever the cost is, I think we can amortize it with the above method.

I agree with TheBigDog, but the logistics could be a little hairy.

I'm going to buy a dongle outright as long as it's less then $50. I have two units, and ironically, would like to setup the second to use for dial-up into AOL for work.

I'm still going to hack at my first unit, but I might have to give up on it one day.

To answer your question of where did it come from I tried to call a psychic, but they said call back later. What a crock. Guess we'll never know.

Basically I believe, Avant AOL in Spain, sold the dongle to whomever got their hands on any units, except for Bob.

Bob is still looking into this. I called him today and someone in Wintergreen first quoted $5k. Bob said this quote was just insane and is attempting to talk to someone else to get a more realistic quote tomorrow.

Also, he said there's a company in Australia, or Austria also doing refurbs. on the dot that he's attempting to talk about a dongle copy.

Is a complete OS reload the best way out?
Lindows installation takes over the hard drive and formats it.
I am going to give it a try.
I may remove the card reader if it sill exists, any thoughts here?

I think they should all be nicknamed..."STITCH" stations...

You know "LILO 22 AND STITCH"

Have you seen the movie? Its good therapy for anyone involved.

If you have a dot.bob, you can't just merely install any OS. It's locked down. If you have a dot.tiger, it's unlocked, and you can do anything.

I'm just catching up, so forgive me.
Anyone have an unlocked unit or a "good" image of the bios? I'd be willing to flash a chip with "good" image and send it to someone to see if it works. Someone told me the Tiger units were unlocked. Anyone know this to be true? I have SST chips that work as replacements for the N82802AB's.

where is bob? I guess jsmmd's the only one who's been communicating with him and jsmmd's busy these days...maybe someone else should contact? (don't want to barrage the guy though...)

I contacted bob and overall things don't look so good.

Wintergreen wants $5k for a copy of the dongle. Bob said there are a few other people that his research has found that have it and he said he will continue to make calls.

So my gut says bob won't be getting a copy at a economical price...

Well, just makes a bios hack that much more fun.
