I'm sure some of you have done this already...but...

Well, just an update. I received my unit last night. I have attached a longer, dual-IDE cable for a CD-ROM, as well as a three-way power cord. Also installed a 256MB chip (PC133)...BIOS recognizes it fine. :)

I put in a 20GB harddrive (only thing I had on me at the moment, but will do) with an XP Pro setup ready to go (on a different computer, just needed a reboot)...anyways, it didn't work...blue screens...so I booted from the CD, reformatted...and am happy to say that it is installing as I type...20 minutes left. Everything seems to be going great.

I am planning on adding a permanent CD-RW/DVD-ROM in the front...after cutting out the neccessary space, up'ing the processor to max spec'd, as well as replacing the modem with an internal PCI wireless card that I have, as the antenna fits nicely through the 'modem hole' (or I might just use my USB one...but don't think the power from the board could handle the USB, along with other peripherals, so not sure on that.

Anyways, I will keep you all posted/pics...should anything arise I think would be beneficial.

Everything loaded up fine...no driver issues at all, everything works (Windows XP Professional). All of the updates took (there was even an Intel update for the NIC. lol)

Anyways, going to finish loading up software, since I have the CD-ROM still hooked up...and I'll get to making it a permanent solution later on when I have more time. I'd like to just get the thing back together again for now.

I noticed in another post...but also thinking of trying some PCI risers that I have later...and also thinking about possibly dumping some, if not all, of the casing, and constructing my own. As you all know, it's pretty tight quarters in the Dot...so any expansion could possibly need at least some slightly more room.

<christopherboyce>Good news regarding the installation of XP on your Intel Dot!
What processor did you use? I am assuming that you have a Dot.Bob and curious what chip set it has?

Thanks.

Right now, it still has the 300mhz Celeron in it...haven't had time to get an upgrade yet (it's only been a day since I've had it). I did upgrade the RAM to 256MB though.

I purchased this Dot from a third party, on Ebay ($100, including shipping). Upon receiving it, it booted right into the KDE Linux distribution. After contacting the seller again about where he got it...he said he got it from Tiger Direct a long time ago.

I have since installed all of my regular apps...Office XP, Photoshop 7.0 (runs surpisingly good!!), Acrobat Writer, GoLive 6.0, etc...etc...plus my MP3 collection. Haven't had any problems whatsoever.

Well, I'm officially on wireless now. :) My PCI wireless card worked excellent, even with the case fully back on...however, I did take it out, and am simply using a USB Wi-Fi for now. I'd like to increase the video RAM somehow. There is a measely 4MB on the board...isn't so great running video...bearable, but not what I'd want. We could always install a PCI video card (finding one that will fit, and not heat too bad is the challenge). What would be really nice, would be to use a dual/triple riser card to get a video card, wireless PCI, etc...all in there. I'm thinking a new case, or a serious mod is in order for such an endeavor though. lol
