Any clues on the IR port

Does anyone have any idea what part was originally designed to go in the front panel? Mapping out the wiring, it appears that it supports a standard module, except for the fact that the wires are in the wrong order. Otherwise, it appears to provide +5 Vcc, GND, and a serial line.

Also, is there a standard way to access the IRdA port, or is this going to fall under the category of ongoing mystery, like the card reader?

Also, I may try to see if I can simply run an IR LED up there, and actually mount the rest of the IR logic elsewhere. This would also free up a +5 to light up the power light. At the moment, I have rerouted the GREEN LED line to the power lamp - which actually works quite well. The YELLOW lamp still comes on when the system is sleeping - making the LED's work kind of like they do on a stereo component.

ARGHH! Did it again. I think I may have found the modules that are supposed to go in that socket.

Check out the TSOP 48xx, and 41xx pin-out and Vcc. Looks an awful lot like the wiring in the front panel, which is OUT, GND, and Serial IN. Now, to see if I can find samples!

The good news is, you can get the module to fit. The wiring is correct, so you would simply need to reroute the signal line to an appropriate receiver. There is also an appropriate opening in the plastic case. The bad news is, I haven't yet found a way to use the IR port on the main board. Supposedly, it should show up as a com device, but the BIOS doesn't see it, so it may be disabled in firmware. I've been thinking about hacking up a stand-alone IR receiver and using the internal serial or USB ports.

However, it may be a moot issue. I'm getting married in three weeks, and my fiancee is already eyeing some of my computers for the next load to Goodwill... :(
