Unlocking a locked Dot?

I have the chance to buy a new, but locked Dot. I think Its a "Dot.bob2"...it has no phone.

But its locked.

I've been reading here the past 2 days and it seems that:

1)ripping out the HD and putting a new OS in will not unlock it?

2)the Locking is on the BIOS?

3)on the Dot.Bob2 the Bios chip is soldered on?

4)I can rip the board out and have the BIOS reflashed, thus unlocking the machine?

5)can I just flash the BIOS myself with a floppy?

I was looking on the Spanish site, they have a machine with a 1300mhz celeron!! anyone know what BIOS allows me to do this?

Thanks

Well how do you define too much trouble. If you are into hardware hacking ...it's really not. If you expect plug n play it's not that. Read thru the threads below as all your questions will be answered. Currently mine is being converted to an "Ice Box Mod".

I'm totally biased on this.

I'd say the hack is fun. I'm working on doing a flash from the dot itself, through the UI.

Not sure about the floppy boot to re-image. If you found out how to do this let me know.

Otherwise to answer you question, given the cost, and the upgradbility, I think it's worth it. As for the BIOS, read the BIOS threads. That's as far as we've made it. I think I have all the bios that are out there so the ones I have should work on to get you there. People might be also using a socket adapter (or an "overdrive" solution) to make the jump to 1300.
