Overheating?
Worried about overheating - my case fan doesn't seem to be spinning.

I just got a dot.station (freed-up bios, windows xp installed) today. I've had it on most of the day, and noticed that the vent above the monitor was very hot (accompanied by that worrying hot 'smell'). There looks to be a fan there (and I can see one in some of jsmmd's pictures), but it isn't running...

Does the case fan come on automatically - and if so, how hot should it get before I start worrying that it isn't going to switch on?

Thanks for any help you can give me - if there's a fault I've got 29 days left to send it back (but I hope it isn't, as I've already fallen in love with it

Duncan.

the fan should be on whenever the computer is on. I don't think it is a show stopper that you need to return it. 80mm case fan is everywhere and you can even get one in Radioshack if you want. I think it is a standard 12V 80mm fan. But to answer your question, it should be on and you shouldn't be leaving this computer on for long if that fan ain't working. This is a small unit and got a lot of stuff inside the box...ventilation is absolutely necessary to keep it alive.

Thanks.

I've jury-rigged an external fan above the case (cut-down cotton-bud 'legs', a fan from a defunct psu, and a DC adapter I had kicking around). It seems to be keeping it cool. I'll leave cracking open the case until after the warranty period is over. (Using a torch, it looks like the fan blades are missing for the internal case fan!)

Cheers,
Duncan.
