Using the keyboard under Linux?
Queries about the multimedia keys, and using mouse modifier keys under Linux.

Hi,

I'm trying to set up Linux to recognise the multimedia keys on the dot.station's keyboard.

I've gotten the keycodes for the multimedia keys using xev, apart from the 6th key across from the left, which seems to cause xev to behave weirdly, and doesn't report a keycode (at least not under Suse of Mandrake distributions of Linux). Does anyone know the keycode for this key?

I'm intending to use XHotKeys, or XBindKeys to map the buttons to lauching applications, and the 'rectangle' key as a modifier to access them as F1-F12 using xmodmap. Has anyone already done this, or does anyone know of a better way? Ideally having a separate selectable keyboard would be better - but that looks (provisionally) quite complicated to set up.

Also, does anyone know how to set up modifiers for mouse keys? Like you have for Apples, where you press a modifier key (like Alt) while clicking the mouse button to indicate the right mouse button is being pressed?

Sorry about all the questions

I have never tried this. Are you attempting to set this up through the stock linux OS? or another install?

A new installation.

I'm pretty sure that xmodkeys is fairly standard on most distributions of linux - so presumably it would be there on the original version too? Admittedly, it'll only work within X-Windows, and not the text console (and definiately not at boot up).

(Sorry for taking so long to reply - I've taken my eye off this site for a bit - I'm currently plating with my BT-branded Netgem DVB-T box - There's Linux in it somewhere
