Newbie... help me make a simple 98SE machine for my kids!

So I stumbled across a Spanish unit at my school that was given to the Spanish teacher. She had no need for it and gave it to me. Before I discovered this forum, I removed and dumped the entire hard drive and erased all the partitions, then while still hooked up to another machine, installed Win 98SE on the disc before returning it to the intel chassie. It didn't work...locked bios I assume. I have some knowledge of what I am doing, but none of Linux work. This is apparently a dot.bob without the card reader. 300mhz CPU, 4.3 gig HD, and 64 meg ram. I just want to make a simiple web machine for my kids who love to play online games at www.cartoonnetwork.com and for my babysitter to browse the web.

I don't completely understand the latest on the BIOS flashes as to what works and how to do it... the translation engine left a lot to be desired for newbies. Could anyone either tell how to do this, what info I need to provide to gain this help, or someone who I can send the removed mobo to for it to be "unlocked"? My kids will and I both will be in great debt to anyone who can provide assistance! Thanks much!

I'd be glad to help you out. The first thing we're going to need to do is get the bios flashed. There are a few options.

1. re-image the HDD (you'll need some linux skills)
2. send it away to get the bios flashed.
3. buy a flashed mb from me.

let me know...

Ok, so I don't have any linix OS to do an image with unless I can download one somewhere for free. How much would you charge to flash my board if I sent it to you? How much is a an already flashed MB? It isn't like I will have any use for the original board if I go this route though...

By the way, I am in Coos Bay, Oregon... where are you located?

Obrigado!

a). I can get you a backup of the original OS, but you'll have to re-image the drive using linux on another machine (via a boot floppy or CD ver. of linux).

b's). Or, I can either flash it for you, (you pay shipping both ways, and $15 to get me a Papa John's Pizza, ), ~$40 through Joe (See thread: Bios Chip Replacement for soldered chip), or buy a flashed board from me for $50 shipped.

The linux way (a.) is the cheapest, but will be a bit of an undertaking unless you KNOW Linux. I'm always for money, so if you want the least amount of personal pain, have someone else do it. Many ppl. seemed happy with Joe's work, or pick me. I sure do love pizza.

The "monkey" is on your back now. Let me know if you need my help.

Cheers
