Installing XP on an un-locked Dot (modified 0 times) RageRover Profile | Email I think I found an unlocked Dot in Europe which would be great for my GF to use to check her email and surf the web (thats all she does). The sytem is running Linux and has a 10gb HD. WHats the easiest way I can install XP? Can I just hook up my external USB cd? What if I have a ripped copy of XP on an external USB hd? Would I be able to install off of that? I would like to avoid taking the computer apart. If not, I'm assuming I can hook a CD up the the IDE cable and install XP that way? RE:Installing XP on an un-locked Dot (modified 0 times) radarman Profile I'm not sure if you can boot from a USB device or not, but I do know XP installs cleanly from a CD-ROM. I installed XP on my dot.station for my wife, and it went very smoothly. All of the devices were properly detected, and the machine is very stable. However, I had already opened the machine, and added a CD-ROM, so it was pretty much like any other install. On a side note, I would pop the machine open anyway - just to add more RAM. I found the performance improved noticeably once I popped in a 256MB module. Once you have XP running, then you can attach a USB CD-ROM, obviating the need to add one internally. 04-22-2004 12:20:18
