What a deal!
It's a joke, not a topic!

New MessageWhat a deal! (modified 0 times) Fred M.
Imagine it! For only $99 for the i-opener, $130 for a hard disk, $40 for a USB ethernet, $30 for a new mouse and keyboard, and about $300 dollars worth of labor, you can have a system that is only marginally slower than a last generation laptop and is only missing the PCMCIA slots, a floppy, a CD-ROM, and a serial port. Is this a great country or what?

True True, but some people already have most of the part, like me. Me already have a 2.5" hard drive (Thanks to me old P133 laptop), keyboards and mice. All me need are cables. Make a nice Linux web server.

Same here. The hardware guy in my IT dept at work gave me EVERYTHING I'd need except the iopener. Even got the parallel ethernet adapter! plus three good-sized 12.5mm drives to play with.

I-Opener: $99

Laptop Hard Drive: $60 - 70

USB NIC: $40

Drive cable: $12 - 18

Keyboard/mouse: Low enough to be free

Half hour/hour of labor: Labor? This is fun!

Netpliance's reaction and claims of "unhackable": Priceless.

I bought a 170Mb hd at a computer show for 5 bucks. It will run windows enough to take notes and attach a usb zip drive. What else do you need? Mine will cost 115 after everything (why a new keyboard?) and a little enjoyable labor.

I know this is supposed to be humor but here's my response:

Still havn't gotten mine but it should come in as follows:
IO = $120 (w/tax)
540 M HD = $36.00
Imod Kit (I'm lazy :) ) = $35.00
Lasagna Cooler = $26.00
Netport USB Ethernet adapter = $35.00
New keyboard and mouse $25.00
Labor (I love diving into hi tech devices and makeing them work the way "I" want them too) = FREE

Total = $227

What I got was an all in one virtually silent small PC that runs Windows 98 well enough to access an ISP, read/write email and cruise the web. I plan on giving it to my mother who would be intimidated (as well as crowded) by a full size PC. Basically if she tries it for a few months and doesn't like it I get back another PC that I can use on my kitchen counter as my wife's email station, If she likes it I got her a nice "cute" non-intimidating looking and sounding PC that she can finally get connected with. I can't loose, either way I'm ahead. I can't picture my 70 year old mom pushing this thing to the limie - if she does all the kids can chip in and buy her a better laptop or something.

Just hope I get the damn thing before the "fix" it.

i hadnt received all my expensive parts, and ive more yet to by... a hd, and i hadnt decided how i'm going to deal with networking..
ive a usb ezlink, plenty enough for getting things on and off, just like a lap link cable , which are cheap enough...
but ive also got some old scsi printer port scsi connector / converter cables, so i can hang a 'real' hard drive off the printer port. if i find there is a need.

anyhow... one system will be a 'sub laptop' machine, that one is a while to go.

the other one is just going to be a digital picture frame, comparable to the sony widget for $800.. for under $250, i think.
i might also use it to play mp3's behind the slide show..

ya know, when you hang it on a narrow shelf, it sits flush on a wall.
