Actually, there IS a version of Linux for the Z80. Just goto yahoo and search for ELKS. There might be a way to write to the flash memory throught the parallel port.

AFAIK, there is no Z80 in the mail station. In mine i have...

#### CONEXANT RCV336ACFW/SP
33.6K fax / modem.

#### MX 27C1000MC-45
Macronix 1M-BIT (128k x 8) CMOS EPROM

#### 74HC245D
high-speed Si-gate CMOS devices and are pin compatible with low power Schottky TTL (LSTTL)

#### RSDRD 3SI176 0A F99390319
?????

#### ELITEMT LP621024DM-70LL
SRAM 128Kx8 70nS 32SOP525

#### FUJITSU 29F080-90 PFTN
8Mbit (1M x 8) CMOS Flash Memory. 5v r/w/e

#### SST 28SF040
4 Megabit SuperFlash EEPROM

#### WINBOND W24257AS-35
Low-power CMOS SRAM (5v) 256kbit (32k x 8bit)

sorry if it's not actually a z80, I was the one that posted that it was, I've since returned mine(gave up on it) so I cant look at it again, but here's where I got that info http://www.zilog.com/about/relatednews/022100.html

"Eliminating the Web can eliminate cost. Cidco's new MailStation is designed around an ancient 27-MHz, 16-bit Z80 microprocessor from Zilog Inc., and is paired with a monochrome display optimized for text, an embedded OS running on 512 Kbytes of RAM, 512 Kbytes of flash, and a 28-Kbit modem-all integrated by Taiwan contract manufacturer Inventek. The Z80 was designed-in because of its familiar code base and design, Cidco's L'Heureux said.

Cidco aims to add a basic Web browser without straying too far from the Z80 camp. The next-generation platform will likely be built around a Z80-based ASIC with an integrated gray-scale graphics controller. "

The RSDRD chip is the CPU. As someone already mentioned, the Zilog web site
mentions that the device runs off a 16 bit Z80 running at 27 MHz. However,
NONE of the standard footprint Zilog parts match the one in the Mailstation.

I emailed Cidco's tech support and asked what the processor was. They said
it was the Z81. I've never heard of that. I'd like to remove the 29F080 and
read it out to see if the opcodes match up to a Z80 or Z180.

I'd like to turn the thing into a CP/M laptop with Flash disk. It would
make a screaming CP/M machine. It would be a total dog running Linux.

Also, I don't know where the 27 MHz comes in, since probing around yielded
a clock of about half that. Maybe they have a PLL or frequency doubler in
the CPU?

I suspect the CPU is some Z-80 variant, though not necessarily from Zilog.
