I think that a lot of people that are looking towards the MailStation as a hackable machine would do much better with something like Psion's Series 5 or 5mx palmtop. The Diamond Mako (a Psion Revo marketed by Diamond) is very similar to the S5 minus a backlight and some upgradability. These are cool little devices, and you can pick up an 8MB Series 5 on eBay for around $130-$150. Mako's go for less than $100.
They have all of the advantages of a MailStation. They are tiny, they last forever on AA's, plus they can run Linux. Lookup linux-7110 on SourceForge.
