I have a question about the "Yahoo" Button on the Mailstation (not about using the MailStation with Yahoo Mail).

I have mine set up with NetZero, not the Cidco account. When I push the "Yahoo" button all I get is a blank screen.

How did cidco intend for this to work? Is it dependent on using their dialup service? I can't see how, since as far as I can see the only thing the dialup does is transfer mail. Does Cidco send special e-mail packets to the user which actually updates the yahoo content, without appearing as an e-mail to the user?

Any thoughts?

Steven

In the yahoo branded machine that I had, (but returned because it also had the locked ISP) the Yahoo feature was to get email messages for such things as business headlines, sports headlines, etc. You can create your own, headline feature. Follow the trancell thread.

The Yahoo feature possibly had something more advanced because the demo in the store showed charts of stock prices. That is something more advanced than ascii characters.

I have one of these with the Yahoo functions. I assume that these are sent via a Pop server to the Mailstation. I feel it is likely that the messages are almost identical in format to a regular mail message, perhaps with some special flag that lets the Mailstation sort them into the correct folder. The trick will be to figure out the format to make the Mailstation handle them appropriately. Any suggestions?

I used to do some machine language programming on the z80 a long time ago. This was the "standard" 4Mhz version. I would love to get inside this box and use it for some other applications. A X10 controller was mentioned, great idea. I'm going to pick one up, I saw OfficeMax advertised in the paper for about $50 and a $50 rebate, so the price is right, model 100, $0. I picked one up today, now I just need to squeeze the rebate out of them. Has anybody signed up for the service and canceled?

As I remember, Zilog had an OS for the z80, it was a basic OS, no disk support or anything. Can't remember anything about it, it was about 20 years ago. But they did have some support for their chips, so I would make a guess that the Mailstation OS is a variation of this. Maybe Zilog provided the basic OS, and somebody else "refined it". It's possible that it's even a modified version of the OS that ran on the Timex/Sinclair machines.

I wanted one of those Sinclair's so bad I could taste it, it had a "real" OS, not that machine language thing I was working on. Now that I acquired one, I've never turned it on. Shoot, it's an antique now!
I hope this thread doesn't die out.

I got my brand new Yahoo model on eBay for $3.58 + shipping (about $12). I figured this was a better deal than the rebate crap, esp. if the ones they sell now are crippled to Earthlink.
