It looks like OfficeMax is doing it again. I just went to one of the local OfficeMax stores and got a unit of this MailStation 350 for US$30 and there is a US$30 MIR from OfficeMax for this product. The supplement rebate form does not say any EarthLink activation as the requirement and a copy of UPC is also accepted! FYI, I got my MailStation 150 for FREE after the US$30 rebate from OfficeMax, last year.

Having said that, I would like to know if this unit, MailStation 350, is hackable. Anyone?

Well, the DNS tricks should work - the setup key combinations dont seem to work though.

I have mine here in pieces now - like anearlier poster, I am dying to find a way to exploit this thing for more than email. The 350 has the cordless 900mHz feature and if I could just get it running as a vt100 I would very happy.

One tantalizing thing in the setup is the "Memory Expanded:NO" line - anyone have any idea how we could make that say "YES" - I see what looks like unutilized chip contacts in a small door by the batteries - this easy location and the white outline seem to indicate that this location is where the memory expansion option would go.

Anyway - this thing has to have more potential than just an email reader. This thing is a perfect dumb terminal (sans firmware)

FYI for anyone interested, here is a list of the chips:

37U (Looks like a Motorola logo and this is another small chip although I think I got more of this one right)

plus there's some stuff under the RF shield - probably all part of the 900mHz radio

C'mon, let's find a way to put this otherwise wasted hardware to use - at minimum I would like to just recover the keyboard and display in some form useable by an entertainment PC or something.

I tore one apart today. Unless someone can figure out the procedure for reflashing it, I think the best use may be to recycle the keyboard and display, and maybe the radio. I downloaded the schematic. It uses a 16 bit toshiba uP Does anyone have any documentation on the t6c13b lcd display driver?

Your tax $$ at work:

Does anyone have info on the tmp91cm20 uP? It looks like it's on the Doom site, but I don't have an account.

Has anyone tried hooking up a serial-loop test device to the "printer" port. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
I don't have one myself, but I've seen diagrams to make one, for serial port testing etc w/ various programs...
Everyone (myself included) seems to take note of the holes for easy access to all the ports on the back. Well, what if they only use a loopback tester there? Or maybe some software to fake a printer, for the printer test -- but then again WHATIF the loopback could act as dongle of sorts -- maybe some fields or menus might open up when the mailstation is startup while connected to one? Just a thought... it might take a while for me to follow up on this myself.
Regarding memory expansion:
>CONEXANT
>SMARTSCM/336CX88168-12
Conexant is a modem maker.. 336 modem? Other chip could be (flash? )prom for it.
As far as upgrading memory, I'd look for empty traces or sockets near the ram... Unless they're doing some kinda of piggy back scheme.

Me too. First drag is what it sends by radio is post-modem (plus it says some "commands"?)

That might be a test/burn area for the factory. The processor has 8k boot rom in it, and it gets programmed somehow.
What are those two areas labelled?

What I can say is: as I read the FCC schematics of both the 250 and 350 show the DB25 connector is a bog standard parrallel port (no extra pin connections).

----

This page interested me:

1) two different kinds of 350s (hardware or software?)

2) does this mean there is a way to install new print drivers? (live code)

----

It seems that the CPU uses "N-wire" (as opposed to JTAG). Anyone out there with expeince with N-wire?

Hello all,

I got a Mivo 350 from a friend who never used it, just out of the box and fresh, it has a firmware of 1.35, and the Function - shift- T method works, I flashed the firmware and it wiped out the entire Mivo and Network setting. I was able to configure the phone, email account , pop3 and smtp serting. It also let me set the ISP account and password field. The best part is it also allow me to set the Primary DNS Ip address. It looks like the older firmware is totally configurable! I have a verizon account and I was able to dialup and connect, but my mail won't go thru, I think I need to figure out their DNS server. Any idea...

If anyone wants this firmware I will be happy to dump it for you, if you can talk me through it. I eager to learn.

You meant pressing shift-Function-T keys simultaneously? My MS-350 does work in that way. I just don't know how to extract the firmware; however, once you manage you extract the firmware, I certainly would like to get a copy of it.
