Scovery 211

http://www.egghead.com/category/inv/00000331/02977860.htm
Neat little linux terminal that can be turned in to a normal computer.

Looks like Ken S might have gone over there and bid on two of them to see what he can do to them...

KS of North Las Vegas, NV, USA
Thu Jun 8, 10:17 am
$124.00

It's like one of those Book PC's that are going for around $189 around the web?

Sounds like the box as is, boots via network, thats why the boot ROM for the network.

Looks like those boxes might go for about $150 each after shipping cost.
For that kind of money, you can easily pick up an all-in-one motherboard,
same CPU or faster, 64meg and case for about the same or less.
Only the slim case might be a little more difficult to find.

New MessageRE:New toy, Scovery (modified 0 times) force
Code: QUICK999 works for me.....
That's for free shipping...
got it for $129 shipped ... I figure that's a pretty good deal...
Motherboard and CPU = $50
Memory 64MB = $50
Keyboard & Mouse = $10
Case & Power supply = $20

We'll see what this baby can do.... =)

For those that dont know, the scovery 212 has a K6-2 300 some say 400, so for $32 more you can add another cpu. I believe that is the only difference between the 211 and the 212. Search there yahoo/altavista, you can see the specs of the others. Btw anyone been able to find a review of one of these things?

Interesting, the thing is gone from egghead. The search shows it but you can't get to the page.

Oh well. On the lighter side, Frys is selling iphones for $189, they're the single line model. I just can't find anything about them anywhere. There aren't any ports and the single line version has a 14.4k modem (ugh).

Here is the site with the specs on the units. They have several.

Like codeman said, the sandisk is located where the floppy drive would be.
I just unscrew it and screw it on the other side, right underneath the floppy.
Now, my scovery got a HD, CDrom drive, floppy and the sandisk...
I think the sandisk need to be primary master to work properly (to boot to linux)

pretty cool machine...
I think I am going to try codeman ideas about using the sandisk to reflash the bios of io

New MessageHmm (modified 0 times) thnkgrn
Should be having mine UPS'd in the next day or so. I saw the backplane has knockouts for sound. Has anybody tried to populate the chipset for it, or is it just a generic case?

The IO hack was so much fun, but I am 'jones-ing' a little. Maybe we are looking to hard for the next hack.

Just my 2 cents worth.

New MessageWireless keyboard (modified 0 times) NobodySpecial
Those of you looking at the Scovery or Book PC may want to check out http://www.egghead.com/category/inv/00000232/03020415.htm - there are 450 (!) wireless keyboards with built-in touchpad up for auction. It uses RF so you don't have to worry about line-of-sight (i.e. you can hide the case). The auction ends Tuesday. Don't bid too high because justdeals.com is selling the same thing at http://home1.store.com/justdeals/html/cat27/main.html for $30 *including* shipping.

06-20-2000 06:38:33

New MessageRE:New toy, Scovery (modified 0 times) redwood
yes, shipping kinda kills this, $14.50 each unit is rediculas... I got a keyboard sent across country USPS for $4.30 .. free shipping code? that would be nice...where do you find that? otherwise, 14.50 + 9.00, 23.50 vs 29.99 at justdeals... 6 bucks saveing... free shipping would be better,
06-20-2000 08:53:34

New MessageRE:New toy, Scovery (modified 0 times) Thnkgrn
Free shipping code.

Try QUICK999 (earlier in postings). Also try AC722.

I love the Internet. I just wished I had found it before I bid.

06-20-2000 09:39:34

New MessageThis thing is sweet (modified 0 times) thnkgrn
Just got mine.

Quiet... quick... expandable... this rules. I wish we could get some of the REAL hardware hackers involved and see what a 'bear' it would be to populate the onboard sound (saving the PCI'). A very good value (especially with free shipping (smile)). A litle bigger than I was expecting. A hair larger than the Book PC, but a lot better expandability though.

Peace

New MessageRE:New toy, Scovery (modified 0 times) Frankenrichter
Ok.. So is the consensus that we CAN make this thing run a K6-2 450 or not? I'm hearing conflicting reports! Inquiring minds want to know! I've noticed that over the last week, the Egghead auctions for these things has gone up considerably.. Last week, I believe they were selling for about $110 or so.. This week, it more like about $150...

Yep, got mine for $159 today. Wish I hopped
on it a couple of weeks ago when they were
going for about $130. People are hoarding them too!

Frankenrichter, they work perfectly with a K6-450. Just make sure you get the 2.2v core version of the processor. Actually, I got a 475 2.4 v and set the board for 2.2 (it doesnt have a 2.4 setting) and it still worked (at 450 mhz)

ref where to get a k6 - try www.pricewatch.com
just be careful on the shipping costs. a $35 cpu with a $15 shipping cost is more expensive than a $40 cpu with a $7.50 shipping cost...

K6-2 500 works fine, but only at 450 Mhz. The jumpers only let you multiply to 4.5 (x 100)

The SCovery looked interesting so I bought one. Once I got it, I asked myself "What am I going to do with this thing?". Compgeeks has an older Creative Labs DVD drive and decoder inlay card ( works with ATI and I think it connects to the AMC connector on the SCovery ) for $59. I figured that for a little more than a DVD player, I can convert the SCovery into a DVD player : ).

Any decent sound card should do fine. I am using a $30 aurreal that sounds great, but does not support surround.
