This is about my last hope, maybe someone out there can help.
I have a scovery211 that I upgraded to a K6-2 500 processor about a year ago. It happily ran Caldera 2.4 linux as a local mail server at work. Its been replaced :(, but I get to keep it :). I have brought it home to let my kids use to play games and surf. Win98 loaded fine, but every time I start IE, outlook express, netscape, and about half of the games it locks up tight. I have to turn it off to reboot.
I took out the sound card, upgraded IE/OE from 5.5 to 6, used the vidoe drivers from the CD, and from ATIs web site, upgraded the BIOS from the CD, removed the video drivers and let it default to a VGA driver, upgraded DirectX from 6.1 to 8.1 - all with no change in behavior.
This occurs whether I start one of the offending applications immediately on boot, or after its run for several hours. In outlook express it locks as soon as the connection wizard starts - I can't even get into outlook to change anything. On the browsers it locks when it tries to display a page, if no page to display it does not lock.
I am at my wits end to get this to work, does anyone have a suggestion (other than go back to Linux)?
