Scovery is kinda iffy

For the price, its awfully close to a DIY
box. At least the homebuilt one would have a decent proc. But, that SAN disk _is_ nice.

I just bought 2 more (total = 3), it costs me just under $300 for 2.
I was persuaded to buy 2 more after playing with the one that came in yesterday.

Plan to use one to build up a cheap computer for a friend to use to go onto the internet,
I figure, $150 for the main box, another $150 or so, for a floppy, harddrive, cd-rom,
cheap PCI modem, PCI sound card and maybe even a cheap CPU upgrade to AMD K62-300.

Plans for the other two includes using one to dual boot to either flash drive or harddrive,
and the other hopfeully as a digital vcr (if the CPU can handle the job) so I can watch my
martial arts training videos over and over again without wearing out the tapes.

As for the price of the Scovery, I also thought it might be cheaper to DIY.
But here's my view of the parts cost.

Motherboard with video and ethernet and CPU - $75 (or more)
64Meg SDRAM DIMM - $50
case $20 (but for $20, you can't buy a sturdy compact case like the one on the Scovery)
Mouse + Keyboard $10 (if you wait for the cheapo CompUSA Specials)
FlashDrive $???, but I'm sure it's not that cheap
Coolness factor $???

I purchased one of these from egghead, we'll see.

the biggest appeal is it's slim-line format and flash disk. Paint it black, put a serial LCD in the spot where the flash card reader is and make it a MP3 stereo component? Get a PCI sound card with Optical SP/DIF output and pipe it directly into your dolby digital receiver?!?

go to http://www.seetron.com for a selection of serial displays. there are other sites, too- do a search on google for "serial LCD".

pretty easy. you need to hook it up to a serial port (I think there's one inside the case) and then write a program or script to send the appropriate characters to it.

I think there's a linux mp3 player (or a winamp plugin) that can talk to most serial LCD's directly. do some digging on mp3.com..

Does anyone know how the video is handled on a laptop? Most laptops have a VGA connector. Is the LCD signals and VGA output coming from a single IC, VGA signal generated in parallel to the LCD signals, or is the LCD signals generated after the VGA signals.

If the latter is occuring, it might be possible to grab a busted or obsolete laptop and break into the appropriate IC on the main board and hack off the rest of the board. Since most people, including myself, do not have the skills for SMT soldering, I would think about using an IC clip and soldering on to the IC clip and epoxy the IC clip onto the top of the IC. Ugly and most likely not work; but, come on, this is hacking; not full-blown engineering : ).

Probably not possible, but if it was, it would be a cheap way to get an LCD onto the SCovery.
