2.3 kernel (cant see hda/ide drive)
2.2 vs. 2.3 kernel

New Message2.3 kernel (cant see hda/ide drive) (modified 0 times) needhelp
A slackware 7.0 install works fine (kernel 2.2), and I can mount hdb. but if
I compile a 2.3-pre6 (or 8) kernel, or try to
boot from the jailbait kernel I am unable to
see the IDE drive (HDA). In fact, when trying
to boot from the 2.3 kernel on HDA it gives
the message VFS: Cannot mount root partition
on 03:02 (or something similar) (also, dont see the drive during the partition check)

The workaround is to boot as follows:
Lilo: linux hdb=noprobe
Any ideas what I am doing wrong (if anything?)

There is nothing you're doing wrong...there are known incompatibilities between LILO & the 2.3.x kernels. The permanent work-around is to either put hdb=noprobe in the lilo.conf so you don't have to type it everytime (junky solution), or go get the new version of LILO (from either freshmeat, or i mirroured it on my site: http://web.grommit.com/io) which is probably the better solution.

The problem is in that the IO is trying to scan the Sandisk for disk geometries and it's incompatible with certain combinations of hard drives (/dev/hda) and the 2.3.xx kernel.

cheers,
