I would like to know if anyone out there is
using a compact flash a a boot device. I am
looking for an adapter to connect a compact flash card to the ide controller on the i-opener.
My ultimate goal is to use the i-opener as a digital picture frame. I would like to boot Linux off the SanDisk and then be able to plug in a Compact Flash with jpeg photos on it to cycle through.
Anyone out there doing this?
Thanks,
Andrew

Lexar (available at CompUSA and others) has a USB enabled Compact Flash. It also comes in a kit with the adapter. You can also get a Compact Flash/USB adapter at Circuit City for $30-$40.

I've been thinking the same thing. There are a few USB flash/sandisk readers available that should fit the bill. There are serial ones, too, but that requires at least a port-addon, if not the serial line-level mod. USB-Serial-Flash just seems...wrong. :D

Well, there is that Compact Flash non-populated socket on the IO motherboard.
Any ideas as to what parts might be needed?

Here's one for $20: http://www.pcengines.com/cflash.htm and another one for around $50 http://www.tapr.org/tapr/html/Fcfa.html . I've personally used the tapr adapter, I don't anyone who has actually used the one from pcengines. The adapters are really nothing more than a couple of connectors so if they hooked up the pins correctly it should work. Note: Pcengines specifically says no hot swapping, I'm not sure about the TAPR unit.

I'm looking for a bootable SRAM to IDE or ISA interface. Any recommendations? I'd like to make use of a good SRAM leftover from a dead notebook.

yeah, what would it take to "activate" the compact flash support on the IO? looking at the sites above, it does not look like it takes much to connect one as an IDE drive.

There are many brands of USB/compact flash adapters. I'm fairly you cannot boot from any USB device, however. If you had a parallel port/compact flash device...you might be able to boot from it. In DOS anyway, you can boot from super disks...various parallel devices.
