These fans are used in a variety of applications.....apparently your fan was not a socket 7 fan. Maybe the clips were left off by accident? Call Tennmax for a replacement......I guess you could use thermal epoxy, but I wouldn't.

Radioshack sells thermal expoxy tape. It works very nicely.

i hate to use thermal tape -- that's what they included. I've got some of that really nice silver thermal paste -- i can't remember the name, but it was mentioned on this board several times. Given that i just bought a second iopenner (mine is going in the landcruiser, the new one is for the bedroom) i guess i'll order extra clips when i order a second fan.

FYI: I've read somewhere that Tennmax discourages the use of thermal compound with their heatsinks. If you scrape off the thermal pad you will expose the lower bearing for the fan motor. You should be careful not get any thermal compound on the bearing. I'm guessing that this would shorten the life of the bearing <g>. This is probably why Tennmax wants you to use the provided pad. I usually remove the pad and go with the grease anyway. If you want a "better" performing pad check out the Chomerics Thermattach T412. I've used these with good results in the past. YMMV.

Electronics run on smoke, if you let the smoke out they won't work
