New MessageJAILBAIT 6 Linux distro is HERE! (modified 0 times) jbaitis
I'm proud to announce that JAILBAIT 6 has been released. JB6 now contains Netscape Navigator, an IMAP GUI email reader, esd, and program to help you configure it once you install it, as well as other improvements and changes. Check it out:

http://download.sourceforge.net/JAILBAIT/version6_fullinstall.img.gz

And make sure you read the release notes:
http://sourceforge.net/project/filenotes.php?group_id=4981&form_filemodule_id=5022&form_release_version=6

The README will be up shortly, available at http://jailbait.sourceforge.net/README - it has a few extra things to add to the release notes.

Screenshots will also be up at http://jailbait.sourceforge.net

Have fun!

Yes kids, don't try the DD upgrade from an NFS mount. Killed my IO. Its hard disk reconnect time to repair. I was running V5.1 and had v6 nfs mounted from my nt box. did a DD to /dev/hdb and waited for the messages to appear, then powered off and on again. I get a login, but it won't take root. Tried the lilo option hdb init=/bin/bash, from my earlier troubles going 3 to 5, that was a no go. Anyone have luck I didn't. Remounted the RW first, cd'd to the nfs dir second....

A few ideas about upgrading from 5 to 6:

o boot single-user mode
o copy the image to RAM disk first
o if the upgrade fails after getting part-way done, pull the plug, hit CONTROL-C to get out of the config utility after hitting enter for root password. Manually bring up ethernet and get the image onto /tmp (which is now ramfs)

I hope these ideas will help you. That's how we fixed Waldo's iO, in a nutshell

New MessageLooks very cool!!! + a few questions... (modified 0 times) jettagt
Thanks to jbaitis for this really cool distro, i have yet to install it because I have a few questions and want to be sure I understand what i'm doing before I start tearing stuff up. Here they are, I appriciate all the help i can get! I did read all the doc on the source.forge site so that i would ask stupid questions, but forgive me if some of these are nubie-esque.

1.I have read a lot about Sandisks only being able to be written to a few hundred times be fore they fry, is this true? If it is, how does the disk cache for the browser work? Is it possible to save files to the computer (ex: an mp3, or a jpeg, or a .pdf file)? I don't want to fry my I-opener!!!

2.I just downgraded my BIOS last night so that later down the road I will be able to boot off of a harddrive, will installing JailBait 6 affect my ability to boot off a harddrive later on? Is it easy to uninstall?

3.How big is the file i'll need to download? I'll be doing this over a phone line with my IO so i want to allow myself enough to time to download it without getting booted by my ISP.

Thank you for your help, I'm just learning Unix/Linux, and this whole IO saga has been a fantastic learning experience for me!!!

Has anyone tried this with kawasaki usb net devices (such as d-link dsb-650)??

I was unable to use it in previous versions. hope this fixes it.

New MessageRE:JAILBAIT 6 Linux distro is HERE! (modified 0 times) piggymouse
I'll take a stab a the questions I can. Leave jabaitis free to do cool stuff ;)

1) Sandisk is write limited. It should be normally mounted read-only with everything actually running out of ram. This means that your browser cache will be erased every time you reboot the machine. In order to save files so they persist after a reboot you would need to mount the sandisk read-write before saving it or alternatively nfs mount another machine and store files there.

2) Jailbait should not affect your ability to boot off a hard drive. I have an older version of jailbait installed and and currently booting 98lite and not using jailbait at all. The uninstall you mention would basicly be writing over the sandisk with something else, be it a backup you have made or aquired of QNX or whatever you want.

3) Come on... I think you can read a file size for yourself! Ok I'm a push over... I'll tell you just because I feel sorry for you having to download that over a modem.
13.8M

Now I have a question. Is there an easy way to switch between booting the sandisk and the hard drive once one is installed? or should I just bite the bullet and create a small partition for linux on the HD.

06-22-2000 09:23:01

New MessageRE:JAILBAIT 6 Linux distro is HERE! (modified 0 times) wiggles
You can change boot order in BIOS from C,D to D,C. Then make sure Sandisk is active partition by using like Partition Magic or Raddish Partition Manager or something. And then you are golden.

New MessageWrites to the SanDisk and Kawasaki support (modified 0 times) jbaitis
JAILBAIT never has, and never will, under normal operation, perform writes to the SanDisk. This is one of the design criteria.

Unless, of course, you modify your installation to do so : )

I'm pretty sure that the SanDisk can take 100,000+ write cycles.

As for Kawasaki ethernet support, if someone would donate their time to help me test it before I release, I could tell you if it actually works. =) Or buy me a Kawasaki ethernet adapter.

My copy of 5.1 came back 'mot a gzip file'. 6.0 installed & running, but startx bails with a "xinit:error in loading shared libraries:libXmu.so.6:cannot read file data: Error 21"

I extracted to /dev/null before I loaded the sandisk, with no errors. Dis something bit it during the flash?

New MessageRE:JAILBAIT 6 Linux distro is HERE! (modified 0 times) i-Ian
CheapEngineer: I'd say yes. Hope you have a HD or more RAM than 32. If you can DOS it, dolly has worked great on 2 IOs from an HD for this upgrade. I was not able to NFS mount from a single user boot, and ftp to the ramdisk blew out of space.

Also, can someone pont me to the startup script that ran on initial boot-up? I'd like to re-run it, to make sure my USB ethernet in enabled. Maybe I can haul these files across from my Windoze box (or another Iopener, if I dare try this again on my other unit)

OK, I'll admit I'm a total Linux Lamer here. The IO is my learning/hobby box. But, last night I was able to switch from ethernet to ppp using the ifconfig command. So, give this a shot to try to get ethernet back on its feet. If you can do this from single user mode _AND_ get NFS going on windows you might be able to get a reimage going.

ifconfig - to see what is up.

ifconfig eth0 1xx.xxx.xxx.xx netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route add default gw xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

I have a TrendWare TU-ET100 (http://www.trendware.com/products/USB/spec-tuet100.htm) based on the Pegasus chipset, I have all the numbers I need to add support for this card to the pegasus.c driver (as long as I only need the MfrID and DeviceID, that is). What would I need to download to be able to recompile Jailbait to include support for this adapter? Thanks...

New MessageRE:JAILBAIT 6 Linux distro is HERE! (modified 0 times) jbaitis
gharris: all you need is kernel 2.4.0test1 source. I'll put the .config file up on the main webpage http://jailbait.sourceforge.net shortly.

All you really need to do is compile the USB module, so once you make your modifications, just replace the pegasus.o file on the iOpener in the /boot/modules directory.

New MessageRE:JAILBAIT 6 Linux distro is HERE! (modified 0 times) wonfa
I dunno if this is intended to operate this way, or if i just screwed something, but when i first ran and it asked all the config questions, i answered yes for the kawasaki usb ethenet support... i was unable to get the 3com usb network thing to work, which i believe is a kawasaki... so i try a netgear 100tx, which i think is a pegasus based usb thing... that does not work... I am still to stupid to figure out how to re-run the config, so i re-imaged the drive and answered no to the kawasaki question, and now the netgear will work (i can ping...etc...)... Possibly i screwed up, and all is fine, but if anyone else cannot get a pegasus card to work, try answering no to the kawasaki question...

I tried running netsape through a http proxy and i was gettig VERY slow performace (as in 5 minutes to render a page)... is this normal?

Very strange...

I downloaded V6 and used dolly to put it in the flash, booted it up, ran through the install, restarted, logged in as root, startx, and all I get is that small blue bar at the bottom of the screen. No Rxvt, no Netscape, no nothing! HELP!

New MessageRE:JAILBAIT 6 Linux distro is HERE! (modified 0 times) Chris
For all those having problems upgrading jailbait to version 6, try:

Boot single user.
ssh <server> dd if =.../version6_fullinstall.img | dd of=/dev/hdb

It's also very fast... giving credence to the problem not being the Linux USB drivers, but the TCP stack (I've tried 2.3 and 2.2 w/ SuSE drivers and Becker's drivers -- nothing works with NFS).

I know how you felt. Put your mouse on the screen anywhere above the blue workspace bar and right click. you will get a pulldown menu which includes rxvt, netscape, vncviewer, etc. rxvt, and Netscape work as does vncviewer.

Thank you JBaitis!!!!!!

How do I mount the Jailbait Image in Linux to edit some features?

Tried mount -t ext2 /jailbaitimage.img /mnt/tmp

No such luck! Isnt there a loopback I have to make? Any replies appreciated!

New MessageRE:JAILBAIT 6 Linux distro is HERE! (modified 0 times) B1Bob
Here's how I got JB6 loaded and running using 'DOS.'

I started with a fresh IBM DARA-206000 6gb Travelstar. I put it into my Win box as the primary slave (be sure to jumper it as 'slave.'), Ran FDISK and setup a primary DOS partition with the full disk capacity. I then ran FORMAT /s to format and transfer the DOS operating system. Next I ran Ranish Part Manager, selected disk 2 (F5), set the partition as bootable (B) and saved it (F2.) It is not possible to set anything but the primary master drive as active in FDISK. Partition Magic could have also been used. I unziped (GZIP -d version6_fullinstall.img.gz) the distribution download file and renamed the it JB6.img to accomodate DOS.

Next I connected the new drive to my IO (the BIOS had already been downgraded to V1.) Don't forget to remove the 'slave' jumper. Pressed the power button and booted up under DOS.

The first thing I did was to make a copy of the original Sandisk image. I entered 'DOLLY HD129: c:\sandisk3.img' Next I entered 'DOLLY c:\JB6.img HD129:' to load the distribution image onto the Sandisk. Don't forget the colon following 'HD129.' I powered down and removed the HD. Power on to boot and voila! Worked the first time. Amazing!

As a proof of process, I re-installed the HD and DOLLYed the sandisk3.img file back onto the Sandisk (DOLLY sandisk3.img HD129:) Removed the HD and rebooted. The original IO GUI came up with the woman's voice. Re-installed the HD and DOLLYed the JB6.img file back onto the Sandisk (DOLLY JB6.img HD129:.) Booted up to test and I'm back running Jailbait.

Awsome.

Good luck.

i have had problems attempting to install jb6
to the sandisk from linux mandrake (helios)
download of jb6 from the site in netscrap results in just a .img file. copy this .img file to laptop hd, installed to io, dd this .img file to sandisk, reboot, nothing.
using wget to retrieve file results in the proper .img.gz file, gunzip this file and dd it to the sandisk, samething.
any pointers to what i've missed
thanks

my usb smc network card causes the peagsus driver to kernel panic. So I am sticking with 5.1 for now. I tried

but I can not find netscape in there. Can someone tell me why? Can anyone post the kernel source code, so I can figure out how to get ip masquerading?

Tried JB 6 with Kawasaki SMC recognizes adapter but no net. Tried the Linksys 10/100 and it works great.

One question, could you possibly add the following two things to the next release?

1) Samba Support (If possible)
2) A frontend to MPG123.

Thanks for the great distro

I have exactly the same problem (and at 3:41) when I used dolly to put the jailbait image on the internal 16meg flash. However, when I tried to put it on an external 32meg card, it just hung at LI.

I did post this same problem in a different area, and codeman wrote back:

----------

Jailbait is set up to boot on hdb and the compaq will be at hda with a compact flash card
so you have to change all the init scripts to look at hda and change lilo.
at lilo boot prompt "linux root=301" i think thats hda1 ..

Anyone know if jailbait linux has ceased production?

I have yet to purchase an iopener, but am hoping that they will be available soon. I'm trying to get 4-5 for internet terminals/mp3 playback for a library. I'm familiar with linux, but not enough to know if the image for jailbait can be loaded in a loop linux with loadlin. I would like to go through the image and remove somethings (mail), while updating the kernel and tinylogin etc...

Anyone know if it would be possible?

It was never a commercial product.. and yes; it's still available

no real point in putting it in a loop distro.. it sits on the flash.

I altered a copy taking the cramfs partitions and making them loop-cramfs partitions, so as to have the most available space.

removing software is reasonable easy; there are tools on jailbait.sourceforge.net.
