D-Link 650 USB ethernet .. does it work.. I got two 10 mbps usb nics and a 10/100 pci nic for $15 total!!!! I couldn't get the PCI card to work in my system, so I just picked up another usb nic and got a peer-peer network going with a patch cable, everything is working great. Definitely worth the $5. (just have to wait faithfully for the rebate checks to come ) Thanks a bunch to whoever posted the rebate information last week, I jumped on that as soon as I read it. Right now, I'm trying to set up a proxy to share the internet connection for my hacked I-opener. I haven't been to CC to see if you can do this in the flesh and if the price is still $30, but you can print the rebate out from their web page and mail it in with the usual stuff to CC to get rebate. Can't vouch for the quality, but it would have to *really* suck to make $5 a bad investment. Others have gotten them to work anyhow. Didn't know if anyone else knew about this. I will be doing more testing, but it did transfer 20Mb of files with no hiccups. The Netgear EA101C couldn't do even 2Mb without hanging. The rebate form at CC is interesting. No mention of it being limited to one per customer, etc. I'm thinking it's worth trying to get the rebate on another one. (modified 0 times) Youngert Profile I am using the Linux-2.4.0-test6 kernel and also compiled the "USB ADMtek Pegasus-base device support" (CONFIG_USB_PEGASUS) into the kernel. However, when rebooting with the newly compiled kernel witht he Pegasus, the USB detected the unit but did not seem to claim the device. Uploading has errors. To Starfish: I've read your post that it works fine for you, but you're only downloading from your cable modem. For linux I had to add a line to pegasus.c and recompile the module pegasus.o (i recompiled all the modules shh don't tell anyone.. ) for windows, I used a driver from dlinks web site. mine have product id of abc1 both connect to a fileserver running linux, and the internet through the same linux machine and then through DSL.. 12-07-2000 11:38:25

Upload a 10+Meg "ZIP" file to another machine and then uncompressing it or just try the "Test" option to verify that the file arrived intact. I've read many reports of people having the same problem as me. I can upload files to other machines and no errors are reported, however large files arrive corrupt on the receiving computer. If indeed, you can upload just fine, this will give me great reason to contact Dlink and demand a trade-in. Thanks, Unit_1 12-07-2000 19:03:37

Try connecting to a LAN and UPLOADING some files to another computer. You should find two ZIP files for WinMe and Win98SE. They contain video, modem, sound, AGP that I am currently using, and it should work. If not, please let me know. I first notice the problem when I was trying to send JPG flies to the i-opener for web server. The file became currupted after the transfer. After several test, I have conculde that the curruption occur in both transmit and receive, and the only reliable way to transmit anything over the DLink 650 is by setting FTP server on one of the computers. In addition, I also notice that the problem occur randomly. However, transmiting a very large file (<100MB) will more likely make it happan. FIY, I am only running TCP/IP on the i-opener. I have tried both NetBEUI and IPX/SPX, and they are both so unliable on the Dlink 650 that it can't even mainten a reliable connection to transmit anything over 10MB. 12-07-2000 21:14:02

I then connected it to the internet via dsl and had complete 100 % success. I liked it so much i installed it internaly by soledering it to the second usb port. Once again 100% success. So far I'm starting to think that the beige type(with pigtail) are bad and the clear case type are good. And if you have time, could you please try a test-- upload from the I-O to another machine, a 10Meg+ "ZIP" file and then run the "TEST" option in Winzip to do a CRC test and verify its integrity. Starfish: I have a possible solution to your backlight problem. I've had my I-O running for about 4 months and I could never get the backlight to shutoff untill yesterday... when I flashed in the V5 Bios!! It was previously V1. I upgraded to V5 with the intent of fixing my Dlink USB problems, but that didn't work. You can find the V5 bios online at www.f reedrive.com (login: iopener pass: iopener) But be aware, upgrading to V5 caused lots of Windows reconfiguring on my I-O but its running fine now. Both fail to mainten reliable connection when using IPX/SPX and NetBUEI protocol. For example, it drop the connection while the transfer is progress. Which cause the Windows to report "the network resource is no longer available." When using TCP/IP, it is less likely to drop the connection. However, random error can occor in the file after the transfer. For example, ZIP file would be currupted. After several months, I begin to suspect such problem might be casue by the i-opener for not supply enough current to the USB device. However, I haven't have time to find a external USB hub to test this out. PS. As far as I know, both the d-link 650 and 3COM 3C19250 use the same chip. ~ASM 12-08-2000 18:52:54

(modified 0 times) cyrixone Profile I tried the D-Link and a Netgear USB adapter - both got file corruption in a peer-to-peer connection, I even made an earlier post about this. This is DEFINITLY related to the I-Opener, I tried the same USB adapters on a regular PC (Asus P2-B with 400MHz Celeron) and file transfers went off without a hitch. Whether a powered hub makes a difference or not, I do not know - I didn't feel like spending more money to try one. I have read that some MVP3 chipset based boards are not fully USB compliant, this problem may be a manifestation of this fact. If you're using your I-Opener to connect to the Internet, you probably won't notice any problems - however, if you have Microsoft's peer-to-peer networking enabled, you will get file corruption. I have verified this through a network hub, without a network hub (2 systems linked through a crossover cable), on both a Winchip and Rise based I-Opener, with both D-Link and Netgear USB adapters. If anyone else gets this to work - please let me know what brand of USB adapter... I'd like to get this problem solved. :) 12-08-2000 19:23:00

I know there have been Issues with VIA Chipsets & USB Compliance. ( Large File Transfers) I posted a link in the past. I have No Idea where the I-Opener fits in the Time Frame of the Problem. & I don't ever remember VIA acknowledging the Fact. So far I haven't detected any Problems, But I haven't Gone Looking either. That should be an plenty for proof that it works. Infact i use to transfer all my files to the io including all my mp3,which i dont have much of, but over 200 of them. I plan to use the iopener as a stereo. I found this cool usb to mini (audio out) wich works wonders. I dont have time right now to crack the case, but later to day i should get my amdk6 mod kits and ill post the rev numbers then. 12-11-2000 13:34:25

Since very few I-O's have been moded to include a CDROM drive I'm concluding that you mean you've transfered this data FROM another computer TO the I-O. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but it sounds like your saying your USB/ETHERNET adapter works great but you're only basing that on transfering data TO the I-Opener. You see, mine works just fine in that respect as well. This problem that I and others are trying to solve only exists when data is transfered in the UPLOAD direction. Downloading works just fine. When transfering larges file FROM the I-O to another computer, the files get corrupted and there is no error message when this happens so it's very easy to assume all is well!! I think many people may indeed have this problem in thier I-O's but they don't know it because of two factors. 1) The vast majority of large files travel into the I-O not out. 2) When outgoing data is corrupted by this problem, no error message is reported. As I've said before, please try a test. Send a 10+Meg ZIP file FROM the I-O to another computer and then do a CRC check (using the "Test" option) on the file (while at the other computer) to verify that it arrived intact. ~Regards, Unit_1 12-11-2000 16:43:09
