Enigma 2.7 is a great Windows browser for the I-opener. It is very fast, small, and free.

I-Opener users with WinChip and Rise CPUs running Win98 will find the performance of this browser to be outstanding. It is perfect for modem based browsing, even at a lousy 29k (the best I can get on noisy lines). It has a very small footprint of only 28k. I have been running it on an old 166mhz, 64mb RAM machine, under windows 98 for a month. I'm very happy. I have been looking for a browser for my I-Opener for months. I'll test it with Win98lite next.

Now if I could only find the time and $ to finish my I-Opener.

Download it at: http://www.suttondesigns.com/EnigmaBrowser/index.html

No, enigma does not require IE. Here is Steve Craig's response to my forum question:

Good news, John!

Enigma does not require that any other browser remain on your system!

However, do not remove IE with IERAD or similar IE Eradicator, as they also remove needed Windows system files and Visual Basic files, meaning that Enigma and some other internet programs will not work correctly!

Use only the default IE Uninstall!

Good luck, and thanks for the comments!

-Craig

Their forums are very active, similar to the I-opener forum. Steve Craig appears to answer most of the questions personally. That's tech support we dream about and will never have with the Monolith companies.

How do they do it for free?

The 'system files' that enigma uses are infact the 2 microsoft libraries that are used to decode and present html. the visual basic files are the 1+ MB VB runtime and the browser activex control.

Hows it done by only one guy?
easy.. there's nothing to do but put a control on a form.

Microsoft will NEVER buy this product out as it is their product to begin with..

I was about to post it but programmer beat me to it. The enigma does indead request the Internet Explorer. Lately there have been skins and even browsers that are created using the backbone of the Internet Explorer. Can you say AOL? We at work have built a browser using IE as a backbone. All that's changed is the interface gui.

So, what this come down to is, your running a 20+ meg browser. What you're downloading is the Enimga "gui" interface which explains why it isn't a large file, the rest of the browser guts needs to be there and so it is normally is as IE are in every windows98+ computer.

Opera is nice but when will they ever the layout of webpages to appear right.

Clarification: The posting by old_dog said IE was not needed on the machine. You say it is.

Enigma may not require IE per-se but it does require a recent enough version of Windows which will have the HTML rendering engine of IE embeded.
Everything in the Enigma window is rendered using Microsoft's engine and as such is basically IE with a different interface. Much like NeoPlanet, only much less flashy.

koaptec, it's like this.

most browsers today, are basic skins. they use the ie files as their backbone, therefore you have to have ie installed.
so when you see a browser skin that claims to be a browser and at the same time require that ie be installed, then it's not in itself a complete browser. it's simply a skin.

i know this because we make our own browser that uses ie files.

opera on the other hand is its own browser, but it doesn't render webpages to scale, especially java enabled webpages.

http://www.zdnet.com/intweek Curtain Call by Charles Babcock 12/10/00 is about Opera and Enigma Browsers. Craig Stevens of Sutton claims that IE is Not needed and is faster than the other browsers mentioned ex. IE (2x), Nav (2.3x) and Opera (1.8x) but did Not give how the tests were conducted.

FWIW....Opera 5.0 has a free version. I think it works well on an I-Opener. http://www.opera.com/ I got the smallest version working (without java). It does a neat full screen, which looks good on the I-Opener's small screen, especially in a vertical mode.
