Turning Off the LCD Backlight in Windows Me
What's the Proper Display Setting for Win Me

New MessageTurning Off the LCD Backlight in Windows Me (modified 0 times) starfish

In Windows 98se I would just select Plug & Play Monitor & My Backlight would go off when Windows would Turn the Monitor Off.

I just can't seem to find the Right Choice for Display Type in Windows Millennium.
Anyone already know ???

Thanks in Advance !!! * StarFish *

In Win98 the correct display type is LCD 600x800 or Laptop 600x800......not sure about ME, but it should be the same. I have one other normal computer running ME, and the display shuts down ok using Power Properties in the Control Panel.

StarFish,

What video driver are you using for the 98SE? I can't get the backlit to turn off even in Win98SE.

Thanks

I was using "Plug & Play Monitor" under (Standard monitor types) for Win98se
I don't think I have a Build of 98se left anymore,
But I will check if this doesn't Help. (let me know)
I know I had it working Great under Win98se.

Starfish....I got ME going today....The monitor turns off ok for me, but the modem won't work. I'm using Std. 56k V90 drivers. What modem driver and com. port works for you?

The modem is fixed....it worked at first, but after downloading the ME updates, it stopped. I had to remove and re-install the drivers...go figure. I'm using the normal Cyberblade driver, LCD 600x800 display. The default install turns off the display after 10 minutes. Works normal. I don't like that behaviour, so I turned it off in control panel, power options.

Starfish....Have you had to install the VIA 4-in-one drivers? So far, I haven't seen any problems, such as with using Win98.

No, I haven't installed the 4in1 Drivers.
They can cause problems ! ? ! ? !
Also, I think they were for Win95 & before
Seems there is a Comment on the Webpage that Newer Windows doesn't Need them.

I did Start My WinMe Build on another machine.
Maybe that is Why Your Build works, & mine doesn't ?
That is also why I asked what your settings are. (Thanks)
( I am using the Same Driver & I know I have tried that Monitor !)
I am @WORK right Now, I could go out to the Car & Check that System
But I will Wait till Later this Evening when I am Home.
I Guess next could be a ReInstall !

The 4in1 drivers latest version (downloaded today from the via site version425 I think) work perfect with win98 (okay so I had to install them twice. I just did a clean install of 98 this morning. Supposidly the same drivers will work with 2k, don't know about ME.

ckbone,
I assume you mean "Digital Flat Panel (800x600)" I don't have any LCD choices.
When you asked If I installed the 4in1 Drivers, were You suggesting I should ???

YouBecha,
Why did you install these Drivers ?
Were you having problems ? (if so what ?)
or did you just think they were needed ?
I didn't use them in Win98se or WinMe,
But Maybe this is now my problem ?

Starfish....Digital flat panel is right. I had a number of problem issues both in Win98se and Win2000, that were fixed using the 4-in-one drivers (4.25). These included compatability modes, occasiolal reboting, inability to remave the secondary IDE channel, and others. I haven't seen any problems in ME, so I haven't installed the VIA drivers. I just wondered if anyone knew any more about this.

The 4in1 drivers run everything except for the Trident Cyberblade video chip.

USB/IDE/Parallel port etc, all run through the 4in1 drivers.

You know I just did it yesterday, but I have no idea where I downloaded the drivers from. I got the link on this board by searching for 'drivers' etc.

The biggest thing they fix, is that your drives right now may be running in compatablility mode.

(I use DAP and it still had the file info in it)

http://viahardware.com/download/4in1425a.zip

Here is the video driver I got.

http://216.122.141.7/drivers/5482-10.ZIP

That is from some guy on this boards website I believe.

These work with Win98, The 4in1 driver is the most recent. I don't know about the video driver, but it works.

YouBecha,

I have tried both the VIA 4in1425a.zip and 5482-10.zip, the backlight still stays on when Win98SE turn off the monitor. All I get is a black screen with cursor blanking at upper left coner of the screen. Can I know which version of IO are you using? I am using V5.

Thanks

I got a used 2 gig Toshiba Laptop Hard Drive @ a Local? Computer Show. ($42, 12.5mm)
I Did a Clean install of WinMe, & the BackLight Worked !
I installed the Video Driver & the BackLight Doesn't Turn off (V5)
I Removed the Device (Start\Setting\Control Panel\System\Display adapters) & it Works.
Tried on both V3 & V5. Just Can't Handle 640 X 480 !!!
Next I will Look @ other Drivers I have Collected.

Sorry I just noticed the thread. I have a V4b (I quess). Sometimes when I shut down from ME I get the blinking cursor for a few minutes (usually if something networky went bad). But it does shut down, and even hibernate works. Somewhere else on this board I listed some video drivers that work for 2k and ME...I don't have the link handy.

And I only run 800x600.

Thank You, YouBecha. This Worked.
The Driver above gave me 2 choices. I am trying "12" the other choice is "57"

Interestingly, I did get just basic settings of "Digital Flat Panel (800X600) on SuperVGA" on a V5 to Work,
but on this V3 I could only get 16 colors instead of 16bit Color. (No Drivers Installed?)
(might just be the Order I made The Changes in & Not the Versions ?)

I have had to Turn this System Off @ night for the last 3 months. Thanks Again, to Everyone !

I have tried everyone's suggestions and settings to resolve this
and none of them worked with my IO, then through shear determination,
and a bit of luck I finally solved this problem with Windows ME.

OK here are my settings:

The Display adapter is Trident CyberBlade i7 (47)

With the V5 BIOS, My bios settings are:

Power Management: User Define
PM control by APM: NO
Video Off Method: DPMS Support
Video Off Method: Doze

Doze Mode: 1 Hour
Suspend Mode: Disabled

*** PM EVENTS ***
PRI INTR ON
IRQ 12 PRIMARY

All the rest of the PM Events Off or Disabled

save settings and reboot

In Device manager under System Devices, open the properties of the "Advanced Power
Management" Device and select "disable in this hardware profile".
this will turn power management control back over to the BIOS.
save settings and restart.

My IO goes into doze mode after 1 hour, the backlight turns off and my
USB network adapter stays active.
