I have 2 IOs 1 v3b and 1 v5, ordered 2 K6III+ 450s for $55 each plus shipping, dropped the first one into the V5, changed SW4 and was golden at 200

v3b - takes a bit more work

enable split-pane
R60/R61 to R184/R185
Have not verified anything about this step, just did it. lost R61, used section of paperclip instead

set up divider for U16 vIN
R342/R343
R342 = 10K
R343 = 10K
U16 pin 3 (vIN/vREF) = 1.25v

I need less volts than 2.0.. this is a K6-III+

moved 10K (103) from R202 to R203
installed 47K (473) in R202

*this SHOULD have given me a vcore of 1.6, but instead gave me vcore 1.48 .. I believe I'm operating near an over or underload condition somewhere

Jumped R327/R328 for 4.5x multiplier

used softfsb to go to 100 Mhz Bus

runs stably Q16 heats only under heavy CPU load and cools quickly..
note my Q16 is a 6030L. not the 28?? listed elsewhere
using stock power.
CPU has a 12V radioshack heatsink hooked to the 19Vline and dropped to ~9volts with a zener
(this required carving a hole out the back, but was kinda fun..
CPU does not appear to require a heatsink at 200Mhz, could probably live without a fan at 300 and seems to need it at 450

Programmer, where did you purchase the amd 450 mhz at?

And is the iopener running at 450 mhz as fast as a desktop pc running at 450 mhz? Are there other factors that played into the speed of your iopener or is it basically a screaming fast bumblebee now?

just trying to have an ideal of how much faster with the 450 cpu it is.

would i be able to run photoshop efficiently?

thanks.

I got mine from EBAY, and apparantly not a reputable dealer (The chips are so called Grey Market) the aluminum is not as pristene as a properly marked AMD chip and there is laser scarring where the original serial (at the top of the chip) had been burned away and a new on put on.)

it runs darn snappy at 300 and even better at 450, which amazes me since I've only got the original 32Mb in there.

if you're going to run photoshop, I'd seriously reccomend MUCH more ram.

real world tests
netscape 6 Beta3
takes a REALLY LONG time to load, but once it's there everything is good

IE5.01 SP1
up in a blink and loads pages as quickly as my Athlon500

Motion Video - the GoodTimes.mpg video from the Win95 cd
crisp smooth but everything that moves is a ghost.. wierd effect

SNES9X
ghosts movement but plays Zelda a link to the past just dandy

ACDSEE (in full screen mode)
press page down and the next image shows - same as on my athlon 500

I haven't done any real benchmarking programs as I don't have any..

i have done my amd mod, all that's left is to attach a fan and heatsink to the cpu. i'm getting the sunon fan/heatsink combo.

anyways.. so i can just run it at 450 mhz without any further cooling especially further cooling to the q16?

so i'll just have to set the jumpers for 3x100 mhz. then once in windows to use softfsb to bring it to 450 mhz? and all the cooling i need is a fan on the cpu? thanks.

k6III+450 is just fine.. (it can go higher with cooling; but power to the IO is the real issue)

One big thing to note is that the program k6clk works MUCH better for jumping to 450 than softfsb
set your FSB on the MB to 100Mhz, and use k6clk to change the multiplier to 4.5x note; your results will vary depending on the specific CPU you get. (I would assume a chip from a reputable dealer to perform better than a grey market cpu) TigerDirect is in general a reputable dealer as far as products are concerned.

I have my iopener v3 moded for the amd chip. ran it at 4.5 x 95 mhz and it had problems with the blank screen and not being able to boot into windows, as well as the harddrive wouldn't run if you rebooted too soon. i then switched to 4.5 x 66 mhz = 297 and it runs fine.

my question is how can i run it at 333 mhz or faster . the only cooling i have is a sunon fan on the cpu using 5v from the serial pins of 9 and 10. there is no cooling to q16. has anyone gotten the amd to run 333mhz with just cooling? what are the jumper settings?

which jumper settings are better? 4.5x66 or 3x100 ? i have the amd 333 mhz afk chip.

i also have the 128 ram chip.

I am having trouble setting my softfsb to over 70mhz, it locks up. I noticed in the first post on this thread, "use softfsb to go to 100 Mhz Bus" was mentioned. How do you do this without it freezing?

i thought your dip switch settings of sw1 and sw2 would make it at 95mhz or 100 mhz. why don't you do it on the hardware to turn up up the bus multiplier instead of running softfsb.

oh maybe that is why others been using softfsb once in windows, it's because if you hardware run it at 100mhz it wont boot. my io wouldn't boot at 3.5x95mhz but it works perfectly without any crashes at 3x95mhz. funny isn't it?

Hey Programmer or anyone,

Been trying to decipher this thread for some time - can anyone give me the "skinny" on upgrading my V4 or V5 (I think, has SW4)? I've purchased a K6 III+ 450 and have added SW1 and SW2 and removed 0 ohm resistors, added a 500K pot to R202, and changed R302 to .012 ohm. What else needs to be done? What are the best setting for this setup?

Thanks

ASPguy, I found K6CLK here:

Just finishing up with my K6-III+ 450 mod. I'm surprised it booted up on it's first try!

I ordered a K6-III+ -450 from Software & Stuff in Silicon Valley yesterday, the link is http://www.softwareandstuff.com/h_comp_amdk63plus.html.

It's about $60, and advertised as new rather than gray market.

Got my mod parts from dr_steve from his last group buy, everything arrived in good condition in a timely fashion.

As soon as the processor gets here, hehehehe.....

Got my processor from Software & Stuff last night. Brand new, in 'Power Up' packaging, with an installation sheet from Tiger Direct!. Now I know why Tiger Direct doesn't have any more. Don't know how many Software & Stuff bought from them, but get 'em while you can....
