I'm using an Entrega Multi-function USB hub. I don't remember the model #...no matter, they are not available anymore. Two USB, serial and parallel....Anyway the serial works(for a mouse anyway). I never tried a modem or anything else. Some of these newer hubs like this have four USB, serial, parallel, two ps2, and a 10baseT LAN port. Never saw one of these working though.

Hey LowProfile - glad to see your reference to USB/Serial for GPS - I want to do the exact same thing. Two questions;
1) What GPS are you using - I've got a Sony that needs both a serial and a PS2 mouse port, and
2) Did it require much in the way of setup or was it really plug n play simple?

The Rand McNally GPS uses both the PS/2 connector & the Comm Port.
But there are only 4 wirs All together.
Rx & Tx & 5VDC & Ground, All 4 are @ either I-Opener Comm Port.
I don't know about SONY, But How Many Actual Wire are Hooked up ?

I am using the delorme earthmate gps, THe price on it has dropped a ton, It has worked awesome !! and you can use it with a palm or any pc. the software is getting better with time also - the road warrior addition of street atlas 8.0 has great Map features like it will alway stay in your perspective so it is easy to see if that turn is really a right or a left, they have also added voice control as well as 4 million points of interest or so. the only real dificult part (which is not very dificult) is to get the software installed properly, you just need to be on an intranet and map a drive or something

I bought this one, they say blemished but it barley had a scratch- even if it was completly scratched to *^@# it is worth the price - you do need a power adapter if you dont want to use batteries
