Backlight problem/flashing cursor solved!
Solution to the backlight staying on and a flashing, blinking cursor when Win98 sleeps, IRQ 15 conflict with VIA

I had tried everything to get the backlight to go off when Win98 shut the screen down. (I was also having a problem with an IRQ conflict with the VIA drivers which, when I resloved it by setting hd adpater to use "Only Primary IDE channel", would load another driver which would not load properly). I adjusted the power management settings in bios, Energy Saver settings, uninstalled/reinstalled VIA drivers, CyberBlade i7 drivers, reinstalled Windows, everything. Then I found someone using the video drivers here http://216.122.141.7/drivers/5482-10.ZIP

After installing these drivers, the backlight still stayed on. After poking around some more, I ran msconfig and noticed that on Startup, Windows was loading a power management profile, overriding the bios settings. I disabled this, then for some reason checked the advanced settings. The HD was set to "Force compatibility mode". Disabled this. Restarted.

Now, in the Display control panel, under Screen Saver, energy setting, I could adjust the HD sleep and the suspend time! These were not available before. Works like a charm!!! Screen goes blank, a moment later light goes off, hd spins down, wakes just fine. And the IRQ/improper load is gone as well.

Hope this helps someone.

Thanks, my win95 was acting up at times with not shutting the back light off when it goes into dos or suspend mode. i'm still confused with that.

i think dose mode is when it puts everything into dose except for the cpu, and the suspend is it puts the cpu into suspend except for everything else. and then there is the screen off and harddrive off.

I wish someone can show us exactly what to select.

What i wanted was to shutdown the harddrive as well as the monitor when it's idling. Thanks.
