External Power supply, and a few more Questions

Hello Gang,
Well, this is what I was thinking of doing with my i-opener. Instead of adding a laptop hd inside the i-opener, I was going to build a custom base and in the base have a small power supply, and standard 3.5 inch hd, a standard cd-rom, and my usb sound out.

I want to use this power supply : http://bgm.bgmicro.com/prodinfo.asp?prodid=PWR1002
Would that be big enough to power a 3.5 inch and cd-rom? I am not a good electronics man here so a few more questions. How do I power the ps unit? I mean can I stick a regular computer cable into the back of it or something?

If this power supply will not work, anyone know a VERY small profile one that will? I was thinking aobut buying an external cd-rom case and taking the ps out it if if this wont work.

Okay, I have never soldered anything before! I would love to do the amd upgrade but I dont want to screw up my i-op. Would anyone be willing to do this for me if I shipped it to them and paid for all the parts? How much would you charge for that?

Also, since I dont want to solder anything, is there a good sound mod that requires NO soldering? If not I will but an external sound device OR is there someone who is willing to make the mod for me for a price. I really dont want to screw up my i-op. I am a full time college student working 40 hours a week at a super marktet (SaveMart for anyone who knows what that is) and I dont have a lot of money to waste on another :) So, if anyone can answer my q's I would really appreciate it! And thanks to all the good "modifiers" out there for helping me and coming up with mods. You guys rock! Oh yeah, time to pull an all-nighter for finals. Damn those finals.

P.s. I have the new v5 i-opener. No epoxy on my bios chip either. I was glad to see that!!!

hi shaxs, I have played around with using a 3.5inch hd with my i-opener. If you don't mind the extra plugs and box, it is cheaper way to set up it up (looking at costs of laptop hds and 3.5inch hds). I think that that power supply will work; I seem to remember someone else posting a link to that power supply on this board some time ago. My advice for you if you want to try to attach a cd-rom is to contact Badflash and have him make you a custom cable. I tried for sometime to use a 3.5inch hd and a cd-rom, but I could never make it work. I was using my own cable though. As for the sound...you should try and find someone with a solder gun and some experience and have them help you. The mod (just search this board for 'sound') has only three solder points...i had never used a solder gun and I did it just fine. very cheap and the sound is surprisingly good. as with any mod, it helps to have another computer with internet access to look at the instructions and pics. good luck. maybe you could work on this project during winter break? my two pesetas, beatniks3

Easiest sound fix is USB speakers. You can go to 250Mhz with a K6-III+ with no soldering. Wait a little while for codeman's IMOD-III. This will support 3.5" drives both with a 40 pin plug an a 12V/5V plug for the drive. No external supply is needed.

Badflash,
Awaiting to receive my bios and cable. Thanks for QUCIK response and send time. My i-opener is to be a dedicated mp3 car player. I have a 400 dollar panasonic cd player with aux in. So, my sound out from my i-opener will be channeled into ym system thorugh my head unit. So, the external usb speakers are a no go.

WOW i'm totaly impressed, codemans new hard drive mod looks a lot like the one i'v got drawn in my PCB software just not put to board yet due to lack photo pcb and time. As for the 12v line thats easy, simply use a 12v voltage regulator with a CAP across the leads for flow smoothing and you'v got your self a 12volt supply, all you got to do is TAP the main power line for the IO'S reg power suply. easy enuff.
