Laptop-style CD-ROM to 40-pin IDE adapter available
Connecting laptop CD-ROMs to the Iopener

There is a company selling an adapter which connects a laptop-style (ATAPI) CD-ROM to a standard 40-pin IDE cable. It also has a standard 4-pin power connector and a 4-pin decoded stereo audio connector. Kind of pricey for what you get but quicker and easier than building it yourself. I have one and it works.

Mystery part solved.
Now I know what that thing is for....
I've had one of those floating around in one of my junk drawers for about a year now.
It's slightly different but I recognize the mini connector.
Does not fit any of the Laptop CD-ROM drives I have so far. Found it D-Divin at micro supply before they went out of business....GOSH I LOVED THAT COMPANY, They unwittingly provided me with a HUGH supply of all kinds of kool parts....Could go there just about everyday after the closed and find kool stuff just thrown away.
They must of thrown away over $20-$30K of good RMA stuff in a year. I really miss them....

I have this Adaptor, bought at Akihabara Japan.
I attached this to Matsu####a UJDA150L, It works fine as a Master drive.
But I can not set as SLAVE drive with this adaptor..
Some CDROM drive can set as Slave, but UJDA150L could not.

UJDA150L I picked up at Akihabara too.
This has small conector 50pin, 44 pin IDE and audio, power supply line.
I found this CD-ROM and samll connector is used for SAHARA.
(NLX AT clone machine, I think)

I am curious, could anybody who purchased one of these trace the pins on the adapter side back to the pins on the laptop interface please? A longshot, I know, but thanks if you do/have.

Price is kinds steep for what it is. I don't know about you guys, but I have fed more money into the IO than if I had bought a laptop. I hear the same about building kit cars (not the models, real cars)

Is anyone interested in getting the 40pin adapter for $15 a piece. Im willing to do a group buy if we can get a total of 10 people including me to buy them at $15 each including shipping. This would enable you to add a laptop cd-rom to your iopener. I can also get the 44pin adapter, but they cost $39 each. If a good response is apparent, i will make an official thread for the puchase.

Not that it matters, but i put the wrong price for the 44pin adapter, which is $30 if we wanted to group but that one instead.

why would they be from barbar? I can give you the url, but they are local and dont advertise the product. I just used the old telephone. http://www.phethean.com/ntbkcdr/NTBKCDR.HTM
i noticed that they sell a lot of cdroms and thought they would also carry the adaptor. I called on the prices for the 44pin and they sell them in lots of ten for $25 a piece, or single for $39. The 40pin go for $10 in lots of 10, and im not sure about the single purchase price. Give them a call, the phone # is at the bottom of the url. I thought i would do the group buy since i would just go and pick them up where ever they are located to save shipping costs. let me know what you guys want to do. Have you even tried to fit a slime line in the io yet? I tried to get it to fit for a couple of minutes but with no luck. It would take some planning.

I would be in for one of those 50 pin to 44 pin adapters. What are the extra pins for?

Be aware that the part from Barber is a KX15 to 40 pin adapter. You then need an external power supply and a 40-44 pin adapter to use it on the IOPENER. I am in the advanced design stage of an adapter that will go directly from the KX style connectors to a 44 pin cable. It will be a few more weeks at the earliest before I have them, but I am working on it.

I guess KX is that 50 pin thing? And did you ever have any luck with those tiny fans?

Got the tiny fans for sale on the website. I have done no official testing yet with them, but I've sold a bunch already. maybe some of those folks can give some feedback?

Yea, the KX thing is that tiny D shaped connector (JAE) on most new laptop drives. The extra pins are for audio out and master/slave jumpering.

BTW- I just scored a supply of 6X 44 pin CDROMs proven to work on the IOPENER. Should have them in 2 weeks. Price will be $45.

What brand and model of cd rom are they. Does this price include the adapter? And has anyone heard any updates about adding an active matrix screen to the iopener????

These drives don't need an adapter. They are 44 pin IDE and have master/slave jumpers. These are test to work on the IO.

BadFlash: Count me in for a JAE50 -> 44pin adapter when you've completed your work and are ready to ship.
