Can a 17mm 2.5 inch harddrive fit in the iopener?

Found some great deals for 17mm laptop harddrives, 2 gig going for $29. I have removed the iopener's original heatsink and replaced it with the sunon fan/heatsink. It opened up space to the left of the cpu, i just put a piece of toilet tissue on the motherboard so that the harddrive can be placed on it.

just wondering if a 17mm would fit. by removing the original heatsink extra space is opened up, just don't know how much.

has anyone managed to fit in a 17 mm drive?

Thanks.

I looked at this a while back. The top of the heatsink butts up against the shield and
back panel. A 12.5mm drive can hang below the heatsink (with it's top even with the
top of the heatsink). But, there is only a couple of mm between the drive's bottom and
the components on the motherboard. Using a thin insulator, you 'might' be able to install
a drive that is 15mm thick.

So I'd say no, a 17mm drive won't fit. It is a shame, CompGeeks is selling a 5Gb drive
for under $60, but it's 17mm thick.

I thought that Codeman's original hack used a 17mm Toshiba drive, but for the life of me, I don't see how he crammed it in there--it is SNUG.

Sodmeister and everyone else.

I've removed the original heatsink, so the space that is available is the space that was under the heatsink as well as the space the heatsink took up.

I was wondering if that was enough space for a 17mm harddrive. Basically it would be sat on the motherboard all the way up to the rf shield. The original heatsink is no longer there. i have a sunon fan on the cpu now.

Thanks.

This has been hashed over many times. Using a Mod2 hard drive mount, and a 12.5mm drive, there is less than 1mm clearance for the RF shield. These laptop drives will fail if pressure is put on them. Early posts from people installing a 17mm drive, reported "slight" bulges when the case halves were put back together, some also reported cracked screens. Even if you eliminate the aluminum mount, say set the drive on a sheet of plastic, you will have about 3mm of forcing to do, to get everything together. Not smart... I'm using 17mm drives, but they're mounted externally, with no clearance problems, no heat problems. Get an IBM hard drive caddy(small black case), put your 17mm drive in it, mount it outside on the back. It looks good, solves many problems, makes for easy drive accessability. (17mm drives are cheaper)
