First, how necessary is it to cut the RF shield over the Lasagna socket 7 fan?

Next, are there any working X server configurations available? Is XFree86 decent?

Lastly, when I boot OpenBSD from an IDE drive, I see the Netpliance graphic and then bsd's bootloader, but when the kernel loads the screen goes blank. i can login blindly and get a shell. when i `halt` i get the screen back, still with the iopener graphic in the background. Any idea what's going on here?

welp a fan depends on what your doing. If you install a faster processor or OVER clock the current processor you may need a fan. As for cutting the Rf SHIELD, welp it depends on what you use for a fan setup. i used my own with a 1" fan 1"x1" on a LARGE heat synk NOT orignal and fan draws air in from the side of the IO. all air is FORCED over the heat synk only via COVER ON THE HEAT SYNK. i have pics when i finish my website.
as for the not being able to see the screen thing. I dont know xfree so i'm not the best person to answer the question BUT you can get rid of the bios screen so it looks just like any other old computer showing the BOOT info/mem count ECT..

but for that you need to use a program, i'll post the name when i rember it. But if you remove the graphic from the bootup it may fix the no screen problem, then again i dont know any os other then dos/windows

if you're using the original winchip then use the original heatsink. it won't be noisy like the fan. if you're running a faster cpu, you'll have to use a fan, and therefore HAVE to cut a hole in your rf shield so the air can go through it. it's not a big thing, you'll hardly notice it with the back cover on.

you do not have to cut a hole at all, DEPENDING on how you want to add a fan, IF at all!
aspguy you'v seen my bata cooling system. my real system usis that same MICRO fan only the intake is facing down or 45 degrees down from where it is currently, then a tube feeds fresh air in from the bottem of the IO. Totaly internal and much quiter, yet the only area you need to cut the RF shield is on the righht side of the CPU looking at the back, and or like i did a small channel at the other side of the cpu so air can be forced OUT of the io that is HOT.
