Best simple chip upgrade? (no soldering)
easy chip upgrade

I don't think this stuff has been covered (at least not in a while)...

I have a V3 IO, with the standard WinChip. I'd like to step up to the fastest processor I can put in w/o soldering.
Any ideas?

Also, I want to throw a hardrive in the machine, but I want to keep the heat sink. So I've cut a slot in the shielding and plastic so I can slide the cable out and velcro the hard drive to the case. Any concerns there? I think I'm going to use some sheilding and plastic from an old laptop to protect it.

Thanks

Powerleap http://www.powerleap.com makes a voltage/multiplier adapter that I imagine would work, the one thatsupports K6-IIIs supports 1.8v and therefore the K6-III+ CPUs...

The problem here is, these Powerleap adapters require external power. Normally you would hook them up to a hard drive power cable; how would you wire one of these things to the i-Opener power supply to draw the proper wattage/voltage it needs for powering the CPU? Any help on this would be appreciated..

(It might end up still requiring soldering, but likely a helluvalot less than moving resistors around would.)

YOu can add a 2.5inch laptop drive that is 12.5mm or less to the side of the iopener. to theside of the heatsink and not either on top or inside the heatsink.

it's not worthwhile to do an upgrade without soldering.
your best solution is to use win95 and to use cacheman to optimize your resources.

if you have a v5, you can drop in a k6-III+ without soldering, you will need to change the voltage jumpers.. and I'm not sure how well the stock heatsink would fit...

On a V3, which doesn't have switch SW4 and has a single-plane CPU power configuration, you can only use Socket-5 compatible CPUs without soldering mods. This includes the P133, P166 non-MMX, P200 non-MMX, WinChip and WinChip2. Of these, the WinChip2 has the highest performance. The Intel CPUs will probably trip the current limit and/or run too hot, but YMMV.

With some minimal soldering mods, you can go upto 300 Mhz with an underclocked AMD K6-III+/450.

Are the WinChip2's available anywhere?

I'll get to the point

Here's my questions:

Is there a diagram for sw3 and sw4? i.e. clock multiplier, and voltage? I have a ver 4. Rise 266 no goo good IDE contacts ver5 hacked bios.

Please let me know. Thanks.

I've seen some "Evergreen Spectra" 233mhz pentium upgrade CPU's that have the Winchip2 at some local Fred meyer stores on clearance for $49.99.
These have a Heatsink attached and CPU fan wired right to the CPU voltage adapter. No external power supply needed but one will have to cut a hole in there RF screen and back cover due to the excessive thickness of the entire assembly.

Northstar: you can try the link at the bottom of this thread http://snoopy.net/pipermail/iopener/2000-December/thread.html
I think the guys name was John Johnson. Has a WinChip2 for $45. Kind of steep, but I don't see them around anymore.
