i think that anything with motion will look bad

Plus it's only a 2M video setup right? Talk about poor accel!!! Even if the chip has the capability, that does not mean it is being fully utilized!

From playing with it at the store, anything with motion will look like crap. DVD would be a big blur....

This isn't actually such a bad idea using the VGA out hack and driving an external monitor. Remember that the video card draws from system RAM dynamically as it needs it.

An even better hack, though much more involved, would be to build a TV-Out daughter board.

Spec Snippit:
TV Presentation/Game Ready
• Direct interface to Trident TVXpress™ digital TV encoder
• Digital encoder interface for TV/MV7 output
• Low cost, high quality PC to TV output
• NTSC and PAL outputs
• Composite, S-Video, and SCART interface
• Programmable multi-tap filtering
• Overscan and underscan

Build a custom case that holds everything and fit's in your component rack. Get a wireless pointer/remote, IR transmitter to control other components, write some custom software, and you have an infinitely adaptable A/V control unit and DVD player that would look real cool.

You could even access it from the web if you have a dedicated connection, or use a dial-in server, so you could remotely set the VCR to record that TLC show that your gonna miss because you have to work late after spending all day roaming the IO boards. (or WWF in the case of some on this board)

Why should a daughterboard be needed? Do the NTSC and PAL outputs require external components? Generally, when a chip spec claims NTSC output, I would expect it to mean exactly that: one of the pins provides a composite NTSC video signal. Or better yet, a YUV output set as well that provides NTSC component output (S-Video)

Is there an easy way to get a copy of the pinouts or OEM design specs on the chip? I didn't see anything like that on the Trident site. Perhaps adding a TV-out connector is all that is needed. Can anybody confirm or deny? (using _real_ info, that is :)

This has been on my list of things to try from the start.

DVD Playback requires space large enough for the frame buffer.. with 2 Megs of ram, you can run a DVD at 800x600x16bit as long as your software only single buffers.. Most player want to double or triple buffer. You need 4 Megs or ram to triple buffer 800x600, this means a change to the bios to change the amount of memory to share.
