IO V5 Mod - Problem w/sound
No sound w/V5, Win98

As anyone done a Mod to the latest V5 IO (from HSC) with the Rise Processor and the latest BIOS from BadFlash?

Problem is that W98 detects the sound support as "PCI Multimedia Sound Support" and starts asking for the associated drivers. I have no clue what drivers to supply?

On-Chip sound is enabeled in the BIOS setup and I have tried both with and without the VIA 4in1 drivers, which by the way seem to cause more problems than they solve. Video seems to work fine with the Trident CyberBlade drivers. The only conflict now is sound support, everything else is fine.

Thanks for any ideas anyone can give.

Don

If anyone has Win95 working on a V5 with sound, let us know what windows is listing as the sound hardware in the device mangler.

The sound drivers for a V5 (not Yamaha) are available off the VIA website.

Well, got it working, thanks to "mineispooter" and the driver links below!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download these drivers from this site:

http://www.via.com.tw/drivers/68mu111b.exe

This is a direct link to the sound drivers. "VT82C686A Southbridge Audio Driver" Its about a 10 mb download. This will solve your problem. "Enables the integrated audio function for the VT82C686A South bridge" ... explanation on website.

here's a page for the VIA chipset drivers:

I got audio working on orginal Win95, (briefly) but I used the drivers from 68usr108.exe that I found listed from another post here. My only problem now is that I have a resource conflict and the audio hardware is stuck on trying to use IRQ 15.

This is my first I-O "Modification" but I realy thought the sound that comes from the machine really sucks, I had to stop and think about why I spent several hours working on it after I heard the first sound come from it !!

There's nothing wrong with the sound chip....it's the speakers. If you can come up with a small set such as a set designed for a Walkman (passive), disconnect the stock set, wire in an external setup....it's not bad at all. You can find small speakers for $10.

I setup a line out circuit at first. Sounds fine but the problem is there is no true balance. The issue(s) lie between there is a common ground that is interfearing with the L and R channels. I got the hack from http://www.i-hacked.com and added a set of .33uf caps in series. no pops or hisses just a balance issue. I took care of it by creating a step down circuit and went directly into the speaker outputs. This circuit converts Hi output (from the IO's internal audio amp) to standard line level output. (this circuit can be found at your local Radio Sh**k stores in a technicians handbook) I bypassed the volume switch and went direct to the source. wala ! got good clean sound with no balance issues. I even added 2 pots to control the output level on the step down circuit. I have the system now in the car mounted on a console with a fm stereo transmitter (for walkmans, portable cd players, etc) running in a 2000 watt system. I have currently a 3.2gb laptop drive (cause the 3.5" 17GB was too bulky with the external power supply and external IDE cable) loaded with 64MB Win98SE and Apollo MP3 Player ( can be found on ftp://ftp:4.34.146.130:8080 ) mine was a ver 4 with a hacked ver 5 bios from http://www.badflash.com .

I'm starting a new forum. I like this one but there is no real options. Yes there is a ton of topics. I even created a bitch out area so if you get riled up about something, go there and keep the normal area clean of bad comments about people.

Sorry - the FTP address is correct but this bbs placed an additional ftp in front of the address. so here it is in plain english:

ftp://4.34.146.130:8080

or just copy and paste the address to your browser's address bar. The server is mostly up 24:7 but I have to reboot sometimes. (Yes it's my box) feel free to download.

L8R!
