Office Depot (not online, in store only) has the Acer Warplink USB wireless networking kit on clearance for $30. It has 2 usb network receivers/emitters. I took one apart and here is a picture. I intend to mount it in the base. Normally it goes for over a $100. It only does less than 1Mbps. Someone else reported 256kbps, but I have not tried yet. The word is out, so check your local store if you want one. Sku is 479-011. Clearance price is 29.88. Here are some pictures.

I am sure this hack has been posted before, but not for this price.

Anyone know what kind of chip (kawasaki etc.) the ethernet part uses? Pretty sweet deal. (If the snow melts and I can get there!)

Blame my cable company for the timeout. Their 'personal web space' sux. I am always getting timeouts when trying to upload pictures there.

As for what chip it uses, there is a cypress usb chip, but the ethernet chip seems to be covered by a metal shield.

I managed to get one for the mentioned $30. The software loaded ok in one I-Opener (ME), and another computer (ME). From the I-Opener I can access files ok, and MP3s on the other computer play ok over the network. However, from the other computer, I cannot access large files on the I-O. The other computer crashes when I try to do so. I'll keep trying. Maybe some updated drivers would help. Cute toy.....

The sales drone had to be persuaded to look up the sale price. It was marked as $89. They have two left at my local store.

Thanks for the heads-up on this one. I found a couple after driving around a bit. The sweet thing about this deal is that there are 2 units in the package, so it's about $16 each (after taxes).

Bay Area residents may try their luck at Oakland. I think every valley store is cleaned out (I didn't go to all, but checked on a store computer - which may not be up-to-date. The SKU number comes up as invalid for most stores).

It's FHSS, so it's probably similar to the first-generation Proxim symphony units. I doubt that it is 802.11 compliant. It's a very sweet deal for hacking and grafting *inside* an I-Opener. I'll take a look at the feasibility shortly.

If anyone gets one of these things working ok on an I-Opener, please post the details. Data coming into the I-Opener is ok....slow but ok. Data leaving the I-Opener causes a hang-up on the other computer, sometimes a crash on both computers. My download of the latest drivers refuses to install on either computer. Good deal...ho, ho, ho. This may be the same VIA/USB problem that other USB network devices experience on the I-Opener.

OK, the chipset it uses is the Mitel DE6038 Waverider2 wireless LAN chipset (or parts of it). The WL102B Wireless Data Controller is visible next to the Cypress EZ-USB USB device controller. I imagine that the RF sections of the chipset (the WL800 frequency synthesizer and the WL600C RF/IF circuit) are covered by the RF shield.

The interesting thing is that this is a highly configurable controller, and in particular it is possible to implement an 802.11-compliant FHSS radio with it. Unfortunately, 802.11 compliance does not mean interoperability with other manufacturers' devices. The WL102B has an 8051 core to implement some portions of the protocol stacks. You can see the 1 Mbit flash device next to it that probably contains the firmware for the 8051, plus downloadable microcode for some of the DSP cores in the WL102B. This configurability means that Acer could have defined a completely proprietary wireless LAN system which could be near-impossible to interoperate with. Actually, the system could have been made Bluetooth-compliant, if they had so desired.

Here's a link to the Mitel datasheet for the wireless data controller.

http://www.mitelsemi.com/products/download_details.cgi?partno=WL102B

There's probably no point in trying to hack it at the baseband level - this deal was a sweet 'as-is' deal, not as a hackable device. Of course, one can easily transplant it in a variety of Windows boxen and use it as originally intended.

Hey thanks for the tip. This is a great product with out hacking it. I bought a couple of kits and have one of the usb cards velcro-ed to the back of my laptop and can surf the web and share files anywhere in the house. I have a couple of i-openers and this is going to work great. I found a few kits here in alabama i guess there are not many people in my area that read this forum, or don't care to use wireless. Thanks again keep the tips coming.

I've had the WarpLink running fine on my I-Opener for a week or so now. I haven't stress-tested it with large transfers, but it works fine sending an occasional MP3 to the I-Opener or browsing the web from my truck :)

No special configuration, I loaded the software on the I-Opener (98lite) and on a PC in the office (Win2K Pro) and they talk fine.

Now only if there was a way that the I-Opener could see the other PCs on my network... Could I somehow bind the WarpLink adapter to my NIC in the host PC?

i guess ckbone and i are the only ones that notice the HUGE problem with these warplink devices not working on the iopener to regular pc.

my desktop must have crashed 5 times before i remember ckbone's repeated yell of inquiry on the subject. thank god i didn't pursue to troubleshoot this on my own before rereading this post. was going to reinstall with latest drives but i would guess ckbone have tried that.

my desktop freezes when i try to copy and paste a file from it to the iopener. i've tried copying the "sygate" file from my desktop cdrom to the iopener from both machine. everytime it'll freeze and the file wouldn't transfer over. the file is just a 2meg.

the iopener cannot see the other computers on the lan that my desktop is connected to through a regular bus and cable.

anyone have solved this problem with the iopener?

Hi,
Well, I missed this thread until this morning, called 2 local Office Depots, both had em in stock. Eventually I decided to clean out the Kingston NY store as they had the most (3 sets). If people are interested the Poughkeepsie NY store had 2 in stock as of this AM. I'd appeciate any feedback from folks who have been using these for a while. 3 sets will work great with the I-Opener contingent I currently have.

Thanks for the thread, the cost of $15 a piece these are less than half the price I pay for Linksys 10/100 USB ethernet units from buy.com.

Are there Linux drivers for these??

this is the downside, the computer with just the warplink device can't see the rest of the other computers that are connected throught he regular cat-5 cable and hub. for example the iopener with just the warplink device can't see the rest of the computers on the lan that the desktop with the warplink device as well as the cat-5 and hub can see.

also, i have internet sharing throughout my regular lan using the windows98se internet sharing feature. i can't seem to get sysgate the internet sharing program that came with warplink to work with the microsoft feature. i can get it to work with just the computers having the warplink though, but then the rest of the pcs on the lan would miss that feature. and i can't get the iopener using the warplink to use the microsoft internet sharing feature.

whenever i try to copy and past a file from my desktop to the iopener using my desktop or iopener the desktop freezes. ckbone has been inquiring on this problem by himself until i 2nd it. no one else have said much on it.

did you know that each of the warplink cost just under $99 each? that's a $200 deal for just $30. what a steal.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply, did you try W2K at all as the server? It appears to me sygate and W98SE's IP sharing are sorta tacked on solutions to W98 while W2K appears to support IP forwarding more as an intended/thought out consequence of network software design.

As to the price, well if they work it's fantastic, I hope to report back in a couple of days my own experience. If they don't the people at OfficeMax said they could be returned within 14 days. It'd be real slick if they can be made to work with my LAN, the cost per system would be less than for most usb ethernet devices.

Funny what happened when I took my iopener out for the first time at Border's Bookstore the other night. Several people inquired on the iopener capabilities. One of which was how much ram it could hold, I said that i had a 128 sdram chip inside, but i suppose it could be a 256 meg, who knows. They asked where they can buy one. So I told them about ebay and the home shopping network. told them about this community of iopeners enthusiasts.

They were somewhat nervous in asking, not knowing exactly what i had in front of me. So it was nice getting the attention and predispositions that I was a pro of the field of computers. After they left, i thought how cool and corny it would be to meet up with other enthusiasts at a similar cafe within a bookstore and help one another hack, setup lans, for the iopener. So the warpLink came into play quite nice. Imagine us playing tribes on a wireless lan across the room with our cappucinnos on the side. Anyhow, this is at most a dream, for i don't think those other enthusiasts within my city of Fresno, California know i've come out of the underground. j/k

Anyways.. i can't get this warpLink to transfer files in either way. it just freezes and end up not seeing each other computers until i reboot them. Still, it's a steal for $30.

Almost forgot,

I don't know how windows2000k pro or server would act with the internet sharing for both the regular cat-5 lan pcs and the warplink pcs. I know win98 internet connection doesn't worth for both at the same time, and its' the same for sysgate internet sharing.

Will try maybe tonight though. I already have win2k advance server installed but haven't gotten around to installing the drivers.

you can get win2k pro and advance server for $128 at microsoft.com as their developers package called the HOT kit. aka hands on training kit. It comes with online tutorial. Pretty cool deal. You can also get microsoft office 2000 premium for $100.

Ya gotta love getting 3 full versions of W2K in a HOT kit, but the education software was hideous (my cost including shipping and tax was $144 approximetely).

I may be in the minority, but I got this WarpLink working fine on Win2K Pro on the first shot. In fact, it's running alongside another 2.4GHz USB device with no problems and no interference. It's installed on a cheapo Celeron 466 machine I picked up from myfavoritepc.com for $150. I did have to rename five (?) files from the install package, including the .pdfs for it to install correctly.

I'm thinking about making an mp3 player for my CAR out of my IO with no screen. would be cooler then #### to be able to just send my files to the car wireless. granted it would take a while BUT hay took me longer to download the file via a 56k modem.

I initially used ipx protocol, worked great.
then tried a netbui and tcp/ip combo, that was ok but large files would stop halfway.
then tried just tcp/ip and now they cannot see each other via network neighborhood but warplink util
sees each other (must be some setting I have wrong)
This is all on win98se, haven't tried any win2k.

Hi Perplexer,
Hmm ok well 4 pdf files and 1 manual directory name are in error to the best of my recollection, however I also thought at least 2 or 3 other file names were truncated.

If you wouldn't mind helping me out a bit here, can you verify the following, 1) You are using the USB version? 2) You are using the drivers downloaded from the ACER site listed near the start of this thread? 3) Have you tried it on an I-Opener as yet?

It'd help me out considerably verifying that the USB drivers do work with W2K on some systems, it'd help more to verify if they do work that the drivers I have are the same as the working drivers you have, and it'd be most helpful if you could (or if anyone could) verify operation on an I-Opener.

Thanks very much!

I did use the link above for the Win2K drivers. I am using the USB version on both the desktop machine and on the I-Opener.

Here are the files I renamed:
USERMA~1 directory to USERMANUAL
WARPLI~2.EXE to WARPLINKER.EXE (This could be why mine is working; I left WARPLI~1.EXE file name as-is. WARPLI~2.EXE is the 671KB file)
NTINST~1.DLL to NTINSTALL.DLL
SYGATE~1.PDF to SYGATEQuickStartGuide.pdf
SYGATE~2.PDF to SyGateUserManual.pdf
WARPLI~1.PDF to WarpLinkQuickStartGuide.pdf
WARPLI~2.PDF to WarpLinkUserManual.pdf

I also loaded the drivers on the I-Opener and have accessed the web using Win2K's Internet Connection Sharing, and have also sent some small files back and forth between the two machines. Tomorrow, I'll test a larger file and post the results.

mp3boombox: drop me an email, I have an extra set I'll sell at cost plus shipping.

The folks at the store found a set for me, unboxed. I am using them now, on my Iopener with ICS off a win98 machine.

The install was straightforward, and ICS worked after a couple of reboots of the Iopener (for the network settings to arrange themselves)

I am about 30 feet from the other transceiver. Also the house has a couple of 2.4 GHz Video Xmiters operating.

Win98 will only allow ICS over one network card, is Win2k limited in the same way?

If you can find a set, they are fun!

ipx for file print share and tcp/ip for shared net access using analogx proxy through cable modem

streaming media and web surfing are great. still wish it was just a bit faster in order to play
mp3s off the other machine.

Okay I just got it running on a win2k machine. I used the same download, only I renamed the warpl~2.exe. (I think...it is the 673K file) You can open it in winzip and see the files are 26 aug 2000, the ~1 files are the exact same age and size as on the CD.

After I installed, and once I added the new LAN connection (in properties) I had to install the packet.ini as a protocol for the warplink.

I already had a LAN with a regular nic (with ICS) so I had to disable that one (for now) and make the warplink 192.168.0.1 (for ICS).

After a couple of reboots to reset the warplink card to the new Ip address, it works, and I am doing this on the Iopener (98SE machine) with ICS through a win2k machine.

Only weird part...and probably due to my win2k install...I have to disconnect the warplink card for boot up otherwise win2k reboots at the setting network connections part of the boot.

Okay weird part #2. For ICS you set up the modem (in my case) for sharing. Well it wouldn't let me share to the new lan connection, so I had to make a new internet connection, exactly like the first. When I went to sharing on that connection, it now showed both LAN connections and gave me a choice for sharing.

Of course what that means is either the Warplink lan gets the internet or the regular lan, but not both.

I will probably have to play with server to get both to work (nat).

Good luck

I bought 3 sets of these when the thread first started, but have decided to go phoneline networking instead. If anyone is interested, I'll let them go for $55 a set first come first serve. Cost includes insured Priority Mail delivery with delivery confirmation, with the remainder of the markup to cover the hassle of driving to 3 different stores (very far apart) to get my hands on them in the first place. Send email to BubbaDog56@ev1.net, if they're not called for in the next couple of days they'll go on eBay.

I don't know about that (gaming), they are only 1Mb (rated, plan on only half that speed), and playing an MP3 maxes out the bandwidth.

I was playing 128k mp3s from one side of the house to the other (60' between machines) and I got one or two dropouts. I also had a 2.4 Ghz video transmitter operating at the same time. When the reception on the computer lowered (from 100% to 90%), the dropouts occurred.

But it is much faster than a modem, and you can't beat it for price and mobility. The next test is in the car but I am sure it will be fine for file transfer.

One more note. I just installed it on a WinME machine. It installed as easy as any other OS.

The interesting part. WinME ICS has the ability to share the Internet over TWO LAN connections, in my case the regular NIC and the Warplink. The other OS's only allow one network connection to share the Internet connection.

Great, with Turbo3 maybe we can find out why the iopener and desktop would freeze when attempting to transfer over files.

I think one of the usb devices box is defective. why? cause i would plug it into my desktop or iopener and it wouldn't light up or recognize it. but yet when i plub in the other usb device box it works. the same cables was uses, just differ in the warplink box. anyhow, my office depot is completely out and they can't do an exchange so i'm hopping that acer would replace it for me.

ASPguy.....I thought the same thing. Try this on the one you think is bad. Dis-connect it. Uninstall the Warplink Utility completely. Go into device manager and remove any unknown usb devices. Reboot. Reinstall the software, then plug in the "bad" box.....I'll bet windows finds it now. I think the main problem is completely unstable software/drivers. My main computer seems to be completely confused with the software and regularly "loses" it.....requiring a complete re-install.

ckbone, okay i'll try uninstall the software. but it still doesn't make sense on why one of the warplink box would work on both computers while the other one wouldn't. it did before though, but not now on either computer using the defective box. i'll try uninstalling the drivers and see where that goes anyways.

I've been having the same problem exactly....it's almost as though Windows is seeing each adapter as a different device....sometimes cannot determine what it is, and comes up with an unknown device. Once it does that, the only fix is an uninstall...and a complete reinstall. Don't move the adapters around....leave them on the machine they were originally installed on. I'm about to throw in the towel.....maybe wait for new drivers.

I use Norton utilities to clean up all the windows errors that occur, mostly ActiveX controls.

I have not had the problem you describe. My desktop always works fine. The Iopener has issues, but I think it is because I installed winME over top of Win98.

heheh think about this, your talking about a wireless network adapter. Now you can use a mor then one of 2 of these togeather. and should all work fine. NOW if you do use more then 2 your talking about small units using radio freqz. Inorder to send information to the different lan units you need to use one of 2 major methods point to point, or broad cast. point to point means its going to send a signal to the other lan unit which only that card will pick up on like standerd wired networking. you recive a signal from the computer or card what ever and the other computer card know's how to address it. Now the borad cast style is more like a cowax entwork. every device picks up on the signal but only the computer being talked to will recive.

chances are it works on the second method. Though regardless its transmission is in broad cast mode.

ya i'd lean twards these lan cards basicly being cowax cards minus the wires.

dont forget EVERY network card regardless of its style has its own identifcation number regardless of age in the past 10 years. Thus making it easyer for networking to go straight to a certian computer.

One unopened USB Warplink set (2 units) for sale, $60 (prepaid by USPS MO) including USPS insured priority mail shipping. If there are no takers by Sunday noon Pacific time, it will go on Ebay. I figured I need Linux support, which this doesn't have.

Here are some interesting things.

I have a 2.4G wireless video system, If I have it receiving in the same room as the computers on the weakest video signal (70' away) I can watch the RFI as the wireless modems talk. Nice way to test anyway.

Also it works fine on my laptop.

I am having problems with the Iopener, and also having problems on my 2k machine.

Other than that I can't beat the portability of the units.

I'm having trouble getting my Warplink to work with Cable modem.

I have 4 systems on a Ethernet Lan, through a SMA barricade router to the internet through a cable modem. I added a Warplink to one of these and to my Iopener. I can't get the Iopener to see the Internet. I configured the IP addresses to have the same first three fields. I can only "see" the system the Warplink is directly hooked. I see some user are using AnalogX proxy.

Help with details of setup.

This is correct; you'll only "see" the Warplink PC, not the other PCs on your wired LAN. You'll need to install some sort of Internet sharing software (such as ICS in Win98SE/ME/2000 or Sygate which came with the kit) to share your cablemodem with the IO.

There may be some roundabout ways to access your other PCs over IP over the internet like FTP or PCAnywhere, but no easy way I can think of.

I was wondering if anyone has seen this available and still on sale. I saw this and went to my local Office Depot to find the manager told me "we dont' sell any acer" products. He was very nice about it, but I was somewhat disappointed. I'd like to buy at least a pair of these usb adapters. Thanks for any info!

Does anyone know if the pcmcia cards of the Warplink series have 2000 drivers?

You can find the 2 USB Wireless Warlink Units on eBay. I bought mine that way, and paid about $35 for the set. It also comes with SyGate for internet sharing. I have checked the local OD's for them, but I think they clearanced them out awhile ago... I also have (and am using) the isa/pcmcia Card set. It works pretty good in my home. it was a bit more at $49 (again, did it eBay style). As far as drivers, don't expect Win2K Drivers anytime before summer...

Or at least thats what I have heard....

I am going to take one of the USB devices apart, and attempt to mount it inside my IO.... Portable, Wireless....

Now all we need is a Good Battery Pack Hack...

Any Takers...

The last few EBay auctions for the USB Warplink have been closing in the $80 to $100 range, significantly higher than the ISA or PCMCIA cards. Looks like the convenience factor carries a premium.

Mine works great on my laptop, great on the desktop (except when running win2k). (I transferred some files to the truck while it was parked in the driveway...would work well for apartment dwellers also)

However:
Runs poorly and times out, disappears etc on the IO.

I have read the stuff about the VIA chip...my USB NIC works great, but the Warplink has issues.

Anybody out there with good ideas?...right now I am running ME.

I have been using mine for weeks with great results (not perfect either)
win98se on iopener and networked machine. I can stream shoutcast audio to the iopener
at 128k 44khz all day without a hiccup. surfing from the iopener is great also.
I am happy but wish the speed was a bit higher.

I found something interesting...don't know if it will help or not, but here it goes.

There is no setup for the network properties, supposidly the warplink software does it automatically...

Well I was checking the properties of the adapter in the Windows Network Properties, and found the settings were wrong.

So I set it to USA, Default, (computer name), slave (it was already set to slave).

Maybe it is luck but I have been streaming mp3s for the last half hour without a problem, when before it would lock up and crash and do all sorts of bad things. Obviously I checked all the other adapters and set them up similarly.

We shall see how long this works, but it is already better than before.

Never did spend too much time getting my 2 pairs of these things up and running... Today I decided to look up this thread and I found that a lot of the links from Acer no longer worked. Here is a new download page which has drivers etc.
