I broke my iopener, help!
Someone please offer advice

Well leave it to me to screw this up. I opened up my second iopener today and found that I had an epoxy version. I spent forever scraping away at the goo and finally removed the chip. I took the chip out, and put it back in abd it won't boot. When I apply power I see the green light inside the power button but nothing on the screen, not even the backlight.

I read some posts about reseating the BIOS chip slightly higher and I must have tried this about 50 times with no luck. I pulled out the SODIMM and remounted it about 5 times. I swapped BIOS chips with my other iopener and still no luck. I think I've narrowed the problem down to a couple of possibilities:
1) I messed up the BIOS socket somehow.

2) When I was scraping the epoxy off I slipped and ran the screwdriver across a small section of the motherboard. I examined it closely and it looks like all I did was scratch the green insulator off the top of a couple traces. The traces seem intact.

I've tried so many times to re-seat the BIOS or expand the contacts in the BIOS socket with no luck that I don't think this is the cause of the problem.

I know this blank screen on powerup has come around quite a bit. Does anyone have a series of tests I can do to see what the problem is? If someone has encountered this kind of thing before can they offer any advice?

If there is anyone in the New York City area that would be willing to look it over for 5 minutes I'd be very grateful.

Thanks,
Terry

Your problem happened to 2 of my v3 iopeners. i flashed it using dolly through harddrive. it would boot up with just the green light and a blank screen.

i took the bios chips out. flashed them on another iopener, replaced them. 1 iopener worked, the other 1 didn'.t

the one that didn't, i sold to programmer. maybe you can email and inquire if he has fixed it and if so, how.

good luck.

I had more trouble reseating the ram chip than the BIOS chip. The symptoms are the same. After dozens of attempts, I finally took some fine sandpaper (800 grain) and lightly sanded the contacts (length-wise strokes). Cleaning with an electric contact cleaner will help....but the sanding did it for me.

I pushed the BIOS chip into the socket and then used two needles attached to alligator clips to probe both the socket connector and the lead on the chip for continuity. I went over each lead and tested them all and fixed any broken contacts. I'm sure that there is no problem with the contact with the socket. Has anyone taken the socket off the motherboard and soldered the BIOS directly to the motherboard?

I don't know what kind of meter you used, but you could have fried the BIOS chip checking for continuity.....happens easily. Just ask Badflash. When you do this continuity check, you are sending current back through the BIOS chip, which is easily blasted doing this.

ASPGuy: :) when I didn't get the IO I bought from you working after removing the bios socket and soldering directly to the board I got bored and decided to play with a new toy my wife got (an embossing gun) I removed everything from the board and sent it to Turbo3 so he could take a look at traces and stuff.. somehow, I don't think ANYONE will every get THAT IO working again... :)

Never underestimate the power of boredom...

Programmer, thank god i sold it to you! j/k :P
I would never been able to figure it out myself especially when you hadn't, and turbo3 is still working on it.

I had no ideal the extent of the problem, sorry for it being such a bummer.

ASPGuy: Hold on.. you didn't read my post correctly.. Turbo3 isn't working on fixing it (I hope); as of when you sent it to me, it probably could've been fixed.. after messing around with it (for a very small amount of time) I decided to have some fun.. so I stripped ALL of the components (including the sodimm connector, and the chipset and every thing else I could find) from the board and sent it to Turbo3 for his purposes of tracing traces...

Turbo3: Haven't heard much from you.. did you ever get that floppy hooked up?

I had problems myself with the BIOS chip.
I fixed it by pulling out the chip, bending all the chip's pins outward slightly using a jeweler's screwdriver, and putting it back in.

Continuity testing hadn't helped. Reseating it hadn't helped. Bowing the pins out slightly fixed it.

If you got the chip from me, send it back and let me check it out for you. There is no charge even if it needs to be reprogrammed. If it is zapped I'll replace it for $10. If you are tempted to do resistance checks, check your meter with another meter. Be sure the voltage put outon the ohms scale is under 1.5V. I have found resistance check to be ineffective though with the bad socket problems on a V3. Getting the connection good and tight is the best way. I use a straight pin and run it down the row of pins. This bends them all out evenly with little risk of damage.
