Monitor blanking w/ Redhat 7
Monitor won't stay blank

Ok I have my BIOS set to:

PM Control by APM = No
Video Off Method = DPMS
Video Off After = Doze
Doze Mode = 4 min.
VGA = ON

and I just want the console to blank correctly. It will actually turn the backlight off for 5-10 minutes but then the monitor will turn back on. The screen is still blank until I press a key or something. After a few more minutes the backlight will turn off again and the vicious cycle continues all throughout the night. What's this all about anyway because I don't see why it won't work?

I'm having the same problem, but I was wondering also if anyone knows why I can preview the screen savers..but not actually get them to work? I had the same problem in Redhat 6.2?

Thanks

I'll do a little investigation of this. I know that the screensaver process is what's
causing the troubles. You can verify this manually using apm, the backlight will go
out on a "standby", then will come right back on with the screensaver running.

Are you logged in as root? Prior to RedHat 6.2, the root user could run screensavers
and "lock" the console. This was removed in the later versions since doing this was
considered to be a security risk. Try setting up as a regular (non-root) user and see
if the screensavers work.

I think I figured out how to make it work. I had to change my BIOS settings to:

PM Control by APM = No
Video Off Method = DPMS
Video Off After = Disable
Doze Mode = Disable
PM Event VGA = ON

and used "setterm -blank 1 -powersave off -powerdown 0" and then "setterm -store". When I used setterm to turn off console blanking and powersave and left my BIOS setting the way it was in the original post the problem still persisted. Anyway it works now.

Thank you for this information. I tried using
APM to set standby, but the kernel attempts
to shutdown USB. With my pegasus driver, this
results in a kernel panic. I'll try your
new BIOS and setterm settings.

Having the backlight turn on a few seconds after using apm -S has nothing to do with the screensaver. The bios is turning the screen back on itself because the disk interrupt was triggered.

You can fix this-in the right column of the bios powersaving menu, you should turn off the hdd interrupt. I also turn off the video one, incase there is a clock displayed on the screen or something.
