What are the pinouts for the 10 pin header that is next to the modem and used for the serial port? Do you really need the max chip, if all that's wrong is the voltages? If I plan on building a IR receiver (found at http://www.tweakhardware.com/guide/remote/) that only uses 3 pins on e serial port, can I just wire them directly to the 10 pin header..

try a search on ' GPS ' I'm pretty sure one sharp fellow pulled _just what he needed off there, as you are asking...

Nice Documentation on this site.
Look for the PREFECT Serial Port Hack.

Interesting, You have 5 Volts @ the Connector
So You Don't want the Voltage Regulator Chip.

Connector 12
Pin..Name
1....TX
2....RX
3....DTR
4....RI
5....RTS
6....CD.....*
7....CTS
8....DSR
9....GROUND.*
10...POWER..*

R1 between Pins 6 & 10 (4.7k)
C2 between Pins 9 & 10 (100 nF)(nF ???)

Pins IC1 (TSOP1738 or SFH506-38)
1 to CN12-9
2 to CN12-10
3 to CN12-6

• Diode (D1) 1N4148 (Don't Need ???)
• Voltageconverter (IC2) 78L05, 100 mA (Don't Need ???)(Don't Use)
• Capacitor C1 10 µF, 16 V (Don't Need ???)

This is Completely UnTested !
I just Translated the Documentation.
Try it @ Your own Risk !!!

Anyone try any of this software Yet ???

jw7u, saddly but no you cant straight wire it up. the signals comming from the serial port header are TTL level. there way to weak for any serial device to pick them up. the max235 is truly NO more then an interface which act's like a megaphone it just increases the output. its nothing more then an OPAMP for a digital signal. an other example would be that of this. the output on any LARGE home sterio cd player, if you hook up a set of headphones to the output. YOU CAN hardly hear any audio, and if you try to hook the output from the CD player to a speaker you wont get any thing period. BUT the sterio is the amp, it makes every thing nice and loud. max chip's are = to the sterio amp.

i dont think it can be described any better then that with out using technical terms. ;) trying to keep my answers user friendly lol.

Well, the IR receiver doesn't need RS232 levels, it operates on +5V. According to starfish, I shopuld be able to wire it straight up, and actually use less parts because the voltage regulator is not needed. What do you think mp3boombox? BTW, your audio hack works beautifully.. I have the I-opener in my car as an mp3 player and the sound is nearly perfect. I'm just trying to get a clean IR remote solution with this serial port.

star fish, from what i head the software is very good.. there's a plugin for winamp too. And it works with any IR remote (universal, or for TV etc) and if fully programmable. Check out the links to the software and to IRmans page

jw7u:

FYI, just because the unit operates on 5v only does not mean it doesn't implement the serial as RS232. TTL level serial and RS232 using only 5v are not the same thing. Also, using charge-pump drivers, one can still have 12v RS232 with only a 5v supply. You still may be good to go, but check your documentation carefully.

In sum. all i can say is TRY it. either it will work or it wont. BUT i do believe chances are it wont work. who know's i could be worng but then again i'm going from A document point of view and am to busy to fully TEST the integrity of the serial port with out the serial chip.

Then again thats an intresting point??? now that i think about it the modem unless it has an ONBOARD serial chip or some type it could just be designed to run at TTL levels.
I'd check but i'v got 10+ audio mod's to build and 2 serial mod's to build tonight (YIPPY)
