I found this page for a regular RS232 Port

I have the Pins Reversed on the IR Module.
IR1 is Vout, IR3 is Ground (Radio Shack Part)
Here, I'll redo it.

If and when i have the time money and parts i'll do some test's and let ya know if its safe to use this IR hack with out a max chip.

need to probe around and take some readings.

It's Safe according the the Radio Shack Technical Data Sheet. (Click on "3313")(Designed for TTL)

My Only Questions are,
Do We even Need the Filter Cap ? (What would our Perfect Value Be?)
The Original Design was for +/- RS232 Levels.
We have a Clean 5VDC Power Source.

How good is the Software ? (I Hope to be Installing the windows version today)

so starfish, did you actually make this? i'm probably going to try it later today, will other IR receivers besides the one from the shack work? I think almost all are 5V.

I got a 276-137B which the package shows is 40kHz
38kHz is the Suggested Value, I think the 276-137A might be.
The Data Sheet says it has a +/- 4kHz filter width, But not sure what this sheet is really for !!!

Anyhow, I wired this with a I-Opener keyboard cord, Module on one side of the Coiled section, the Connector & Resistor on the other end. (No Cap)

I plugged it in, & ran the software. If I go to Raw Data I can see I am Polluted.
the Software is seeing Noise of some sort.
It's fast, Tying up the System with the amount coming in. I can't Close this Window without Task Manager & End Task. Sometimes the input will pause. a Remote IR Signal Will Start it again.
I don't think this is IR Noise. I put a Red Lense over the sensor from a WebSurfer. & My Hand over the sensor doesn't seem to really affect it.
I should have connected the Cord shield to Ground & the Module Case.
Another point of Interest, the Min Output is 0.5VDC not 0
This will really mount sweet if We can get it to Work Good.
AnyOne else Playing along ???

you may be getting noise from the rather long length of coiled wire.

starfish, did you use the diode? It could be that the IR module from radio shack sucks too.. I have one from digikey on the way, so I will try it when i get it. I would suggest using shorter wires.

jw7u,

Where's the Sharing? What Digi-Key part Number did You order ?

I rewired My detector with CD-Rom Sound Cable, overall lenght 4", shielded.

No Noticeable change.

i ordered the one from digikey, it's 56.8 khz, but I think that is good..

hey starfish - which software did you use to read the raw data coming from the serial port? I wired it up tonight and it doesn't appear to be working.

I am getting weird noise for the raw data too.. when I hook my voltmeter up to the Vout signal out pin on the IR receiver, it gives a steady 2 volts, and it goes up about 0.5 volts when I push any button on a remote. This can't be right, it should go from 0 to 5 i think. Could it be the value of the resistors? I think the cap is defenitely needed to maintain 5V between Vcc and GND. w/o the cap I got around 2.5 volts and the receiver wasn't on.

Pin 10 is 5VDC. You need to understand why you aren't reading that value.
The Resistor, is a pull-up so Vout is High, If No Signal is Present.
The Cap is to Filter/Maintain the 5VDC as it was Hooked to a +/- Signal before.

I don't know for sure, but that is How it looks.
I Hope to get a Scope on this someday.

A thought is Maybe they want to be able to turn the Reciever On & Off
& We need to be hooked up to RTS.
Maybe We should Try the circuit as Drawn First ???

My Radio Shack Part is Noisy as assembled. I can See IR input with a Scope, But Can't lock on to it.

Also, I Noticed one of My WebSurfer IR Keyboard Receiver Daughtercards, I couldn't get to Work.
The Large land for the IR Detector goes to Different Pins on Different Versions !

Packard Bell infrared receiver Picked up one of these this Weekend.
AnyOne Using This, Got Any Comments ???

Starfish,
I haven't really read all the links for this project but in regards to the "noise" Could your IR interface wires for the receiver be picking up RFI emitted from the inverter assy for the flourescent tube for the i-Openers lcd display?
Some of these types of inverters emit a lot of RF noise. If you have not done so try ferrite beads at the interface connections between the IR module and your i-Opener. Shortening wire length may help too as suggested in earlier post. Connecting the shield to ground also may solve your problem without the beads. A good quality actual IR filter as from a TV remote control should work too. If you have flourescent lighting in your work area that could be a source of noise....
I think most of the IR modules are pretty much generic? I could be wrong on that though...

I see you already tried shorter wires....

Hey Toto, how did you get your IR receiver to work in the I-Opener? Did you make an actual serial port first with the max chips, or were you able to get it to work with rs232 levels?
