Primary Master / Primary Slave problem

New MessagePrimary Master / Primary Slave problem (modified 0 times) Cyberswine

Hi

I have a 30G HDD partitioned with 2 partitions and loaded with Win98 which works fine with the IO if set as "Master"
If I take this drive, set the Jumpers so that it is a "Slave", and hook it up to another computer's IDE as a Primary Slave, the BIOS detects the drive, but Win98 doesn't assign it a drive letter. Partition Magic also detects it, and I'm thinking it has something to do with the "Active" partition setting???
Any ideas how I can do this ?
The reason is that I have this drive mounted in one of those removable HDD bays, and would like to update MP3 files on it when I'm not going to be using it in my car, which will also have one of the bays.

Thanks

Is this a Western Digital Hard Drive ?
Why Don't You Mention the Secondary IDE Channel ?
AnyHow, Some Drives (WD) have a 3rd Setting,
No Jumpers = Single.
That is How I need to set mine in my I-Opener.

Both the drives are Western Digital. The one in my PC is a 2Gig, the other one a 30Gig.
I tried the 30Gig on the Seondary Channel, but since it's the only IDE device on that channel it will mean I have to set it to "Master", correct? This arrangement caused the PC to hang, and I thought it was because both drives are now set to be "Masters" on two seperate channels and BOTH are bootable - thus causing confusion to the PC.
Is this correct?
Thanks for the assistance

I've never used WD drives much...the only one I ever had crapped out after 6 months. However, every other drive I ever used, could be set up as a master on either IDE channel, no matter if a slave was present or not. It sounds like a jumper problem to me. You can hook up two bootable(active) drives on one channel...no problem at all. Make sure your BIOS recognizes each drive, and if you're using the second channel, that it's enabled. Is your IDE cable ok? Not a cable-select type?

No, that is Not correct. Master/Slave settings are just so there is a difference
between the Drives on the IDE Channel (Primary or Secondary).
My Desktop BIOS can Boot from any Drive.

Alot of hard drives will do Master/Single with the same Jumper settings,
Western Digital Hard Drives are Not this way.
While I have used one in the I-Opener set to Master for a few Boots, in the end,
I had to remove the Jumpers for SINGLE to keep it working smoothly.

Love those Removable Hard Drive Drawers.
All of My Family & Friends use them.
That is all I use for my 3 1/2" Drives.

Huh!!! What's not correct? If you have two IDE devices on one channel, one is master, the other has to be slave (unless you are using cable-select, in which case the connectors on the cable determine master/slave). A slave device can be made bootable. The same applies to the second IDE channel.

ckbone,
We were both posting @ the same time.
Your posts are a Great Asset to this Forum.
But, You don't mention the SINGLE Mode which is Real with Western Digital Hard Drives.
A Maxtor Hard Drive does Master/Single with the same Jumper settings.

& for the Record, I Love Western Digital Hard Drives, they are all I buy in 3 1/2".
Hitachi Hard Drives are Sweet & Very Quite for My 2 1/2" Needs.

Cyberswine,
> since it's the only IDE device on that channel

NO, This is SINGLE MODE.

Just to finish this off, I finally got it right.
I have moved the 30Gig Western Digital to the "Secondary" IDE channel and also configured it to be a "special" "Single" drive. "Special", referring to the setting that uses two jumpers instead of just one since the BIOS on my desktop is too old and can't detect the big drive (Western Digital web site)
Windows however still did not assign it a drive letter, which was fixed by also installing EZ-Install on the 2Gig "Master" HDD on the "Primary" channel, allthough it obviously doesn't need this to work on it's own.
Thank you once again for all the information and advice that led me in the right direction.
