Power: How much is to much?

Just a silly question.

I bought an I-Opener for hacking purposes and was going to make a few modifications an then had a horrible thought. How much is to much of a power drain from the I-Opener.

THE PLAN
New BIOS
Add Hard Drive
Add Slim Line CDRom (In HD Chain)
Add IR Receiver to use remote in car
New Keyboard and mouse
New Case Backing
Large cooling Fan (Maybe)

All this to be connected to a GPS and Ham Radio for a mini mobile packet station. The GPS and Ham Radio and Packet Controller have their own Power Source and the I-Opener will be plugged into an Inverter for the Car.

On this same line of thought. Can the I-Opener run off the direct 12volt DC. (Have to ask :) )

yes it fcan run off a CAR battery, there is a DC-DC CONVERTER out there with free schematics on how to build it.
AS FOR straight off the battery, hehe well you feeling lucky punk, well are ya?
as for the POWER any device that is self powerd DOESNT require power from the IO. a mouse, keyboard hard drive and CDROM should be fine power wise.
I'v got all that and more running and noproblems

AMD k6-3 450, super slim HD, 1402 cdrom, (serial mod, audio mod, cause i make and sell em :) um USB network card which will be solderd on the inside when i get my USB SMD parts to make the second usb port work.

and if we can get the floppy working WELL that would be swell.

MP3BOOMBOX, is this the DC-DC converter you are referring to ?:http://sproggy.mp3car.com/i-opener.html.

If so, have you or anyone else here build one of these. I've tried to contact the people but had no reply so far. Appears to be in the UK

http://sproggy.com/ then Click on the I-Opener Chip

Under NEWS, 24/07/2000 (7/24/00 US)
I am now unable to supply any products for sale through mp3car.com.
This is not their fault but due to the
problems of small scale trading from the UK and the high costs associated.

Yes, I have One. It Works Great, except it likes to blow it's Fuse.
Normally only if I tilt the I-Opener while it is powered up.
Could be something in the Plug/Socket ???
it looks about the Same, except no Ring Dent to hold it in as good.

I also have a Supply from Patrick, He stopped making them also. It didn't have a Fuse.

The Only thing I know You can Find is for Regular Laptops for like $80, (19VDC 2amp, or More)
I think someone had posted they are @ Circuit City ?

Interestingly, I have Booted an I-Opener using either of these & a 12V Makita Battery.
I haven't ran any test on How long it last. It's a 2Ah Battery.

As far as power for a AC adapter, Jameco (www.jameco.com) makes a 20v Power Brick #169076 that puts out 2.5a. This should handle anything that you end up adding to your iO. It's about $20 and you need to provide your own standard modular computer input power cord.
