Hello All,
I checked on three posts relating to this but was unable to get a working solution after having tried.

Suffice it to say, all the kernels Ive tried wont make it past freeing unused kernel memory.
when I ctrl-alt-del it says stopping all md devices.

kernel
2.2.14
2.2.16
2.2.17
2.4.0 compiled on a pentium 133 mmx processor

the other three kernels were from installs of redhat 6.2 7.0 and mandrake 7.2 on other systems.

I was getting a kernel panic on boot unable to mount root fs but I did as the other threads suggested and did an hdb=noprobe and got to the freeing unused kernel memory.
When it should be saying blah blah init Vx.xx

it just stops there, no hd activity. and when I do the reboot ctrl-alt delete I get the stopping all md devices.

I compiled and installed the newest version on lilo and that went fine, I know it is using the new lilo, because it blew away the redhat 7.0 lilo-gui-screen and went to the lilo prompt we have all come to love

Any linux gurus out there have any ideas. I have this great idea for my IO but cant get linux to boot.

drop me a line here on this thread or at my email jceven@ucdavis.edu

ibm 6 gig laptop hd, redhat 7 initially installed on my p3 and hardrive moved to IO 32 meg of ram.

There is the chance of a hang condition over disabling a Pentium III's
internal serial number. Since you did your initial install on a P3, is
it possible that there is an option for the kernel that makes it attempt
to shutoff the serial number on the I-opener's processor?

All of my machines are AMDs, so I'm not "up" on this CPU serial number
of the P3. I do recall seeing mention that Linux wouldn't work on the P4
until the kernel was specifically told not to disable the serial number
since a P4 doesn't have one anymore. Think the site was Tom's Hardware.

Hope this info points you in the right direction....

I've been unable to get 2.2.18 with Hedrick's IDE patches or 2.4.0 to boot on my I-opener. OTOH, I got stock RH 7.0 kernel to work after installing it on a 133 MHz Pentium laptop disk and removing the disk.

The problem is probably that either glibc and/or the kernel were installed with i686 optimizations. Manually install the i386 rpms.
