I recently purchased an IBM travelstar model DARA-20900 IDE hard drive for my I-opener. I think I might have a little problem though, when I opened the anti static wrap, I noticed as I turned the drive over that it makes a sound as if somethings loose inside of it. Now this is my first notebook drive so I dunno if thats normal or not. I was going to wait to order an IMOD-3 so I could hook it up to my desktop, but now I think Im gonna get an adapter so I can test it now. anybody else have a problem with noises in a drive?

The sound you mentioned is perfectly normal. All three IBM laptop drives that I have has this "clink clink" sound when the drive is off when gently shook from side to side. At first this was a concern of mine too.

every laptop hard drive i'v ever played with has a click sound. BUT one. and its a 17mm IBM drive. That drive is realy fast too. faster then my 9mm drive, and was fast enuff to use on my big computer when my master hard drive sh*t the bed. was kind of funny useing my little laptop drive as a big pc drive.
todays laptop hard drives are designed to be more shock sturdy. so i'd asume the rattling noise is parts made loose so that they wont get HURT as easly by an out side force while the drive is running?? granted i dont know if THIS exact theory is true but it sounds prity good.

"RATTLE NOISE IS NORMAL"
"DO NOT PUSH THE COVER"
"DO NOT SHOCK"
If you're really interested in what makes the noise I can e-mail a friend at IBM JAPAN and ask him what actually makes the noise. But I have asked about the large piece of metal you find mounted to the cover. It is designed to reduce cover vibration and therefore noise.

Turbo3: I'd be curious as to the source of the clicking - seems to be common on most laptop drives. It sure sounds different than the head-seeking on a 3.5" desktop drive.
(And yup, my Toshiba 6.4G drive had exactly the same labels - probably an IBM drive under the hood... aren't there only two or three manufacturers of components [heads/platters] for *all* the drive-makers these days?)
