resistor for IDE LED mod?

What is the best resistor to use with the 5v blue led (RS # 276-311)?

Posts (Thanks prefect!) on bb say that the LED is so bright so 220 ohm resistors are added.

There are two types of 220 ohm resistors at RS:

1/4-watt, 5% tolerance carbon-film resistors part# 271-1313
http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F010%5F001%5F001%5F002&product%5Fid=271%2D1313

1/2-watt, 5% tolerance carbon-film resistors part# 271-1111
http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F010%5F001%5F001%5F003&product%5Fid=271%2D1111

There is also 221 ohm 1/4 watt 1% tolerance metal-film resistors.

Which should I use? Thanks.

You can just Use That 5V LED. (I Did)

The 200ohm Resistor is to Limit Current on a standard LED, without it they would Burn up.

If it is too Bright, You can add a Resistor.
Value will be up to You & Your Taste !!!

I don't think it will be that high (200ohm)
1/4 watt is more than you need, But Bigger is not a Problem.
Tolerance isn't even a Concern here.

Same here. 5V Radio Shack blue LED, +5V from pin 41 of IDE header. No resistor needed.

Heh heh, I love blue LEDs. The first week I had my Dreamcast, I swapped the red power LED out for a blue one...

If you want the LED dimmer, use the 220 1/4watt 5% tolerance, it will work fine and is the cheapest.

How bright is this 5v blue led w/o a resistor? Well, this is a subjective question.

Will the led last a long time without a resistor?

Think laser beam...

Just kidding. In my subjective opinion the LED isn't any brighter then any other LED. The brightness really depends on what LED you get, a standard 5V one works well and seems just right.
