Broken keyboard connector - what to do?

I broke the keyboard connector on my IO, I attempted to solder it back on but it still won't work. Will IO automatically detect and install a usb keyboard/mouse because my next step is getting into the bios so I can set it to detect my HD (I just started). Also does any one have any hardward suggestions to hook up a mouse/keyboard via usb port assuming it works. Thanks in advance for any input. If you have a chance could you test to see if it detects it if you have a non-modified IO before I run out and buy one. There's gonna be some real complications if I can't get a keyboard working to get into the bios and detect my HD.

Dude, You are Screwed ! Most likely You need to turn on USB Keyboard Support in BIOS !
I haven't Tested This, But You might not be able to get into BIOS with a USB Keyboard.

The PS/2 connector is only 6 wires.
The Keyboard "Clock & Data" Signals are Reversed with the Mouse.
The easiest thing is to use a Labeled Splitter & Plug into the Wrong ends.
If your connector is shot? Cut The Socket end off of a PS/2 Extention cord & solder in on.

Hi,
I broke a connector also, wound up able to get the keyboard to work but not the mouse. I ordered some of the $9.95 keyboards from compgeeks (Gateway USB only keyboards), they work great on I-Openers (I have 7 of these keyboards running great). The I-Opener BIOS will work with a usb keyboard (that is you can hit cntl-esc-del on boot and manage the bios as if it were a local keyboard, heck even dos will run fine with usb only). In your situation my only concern would be if the usb keyboard feature was activated on the bios, if not you may have a problem turning it on... for $100.50 you can get an I-Opener repaired at www.w i z z t r o n i c s.com however it's a bit steep for such a minor problem... personally I prefer usb to a hub and the hub to all devices. Good luck!

The bios does NOT need usb support enabled to be controlled by a USB keyboard. The USB support feature in the bios is for DOS not the bios...

I have noticed my keyboard connector getting weak. Do any of you know where I can order a short keyboard/mouse extension cable? I plug and unplug my keyboard every time I move my iopener in and out of my car. It would be nice to have a short cable always connected directly to the iopener and just connect the keyboards to the extension; to reduce wear and tear.

Hmmmm, An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure...
Perhaps if one expects to repeatedly apply pressure to the keyboard connector it would be wise during the inital modification phase to apply a generous amount of epoxy (Or hot melt glue?) around the sides of the keyboard connector and PCB that will not interfer with the connection of the keyboard plug.
The purpose is to provide added reinforcment to the connector.

I wouldnt suggest that at all. simply because if something should go south, and the keyboard connector no longer works correctly. well its easyer to FIX. I ####ed up my keyboard connector when i first started hacking. so i'v got a regular PS2 connector in its place with lots of hot glue. But theres no room for the dang flash card adapter. I will install one when fid a replacement but till then I'm stick with a bunch of anoying wires all hot glued to an external ps2 cable extender adapter only I'm just using the connector hotglued and wired in palce. as for ware and tare I'm using the Y spliter cable which works great. considering I use my io like a laptop.

So a regular PS2 extension cable will have all of the pins required to connect the iopener keyboard/mouse combo?

If you broke off the connector or MELTED the plastic on the inside so that the PINS are not in the right posision to make contact, THEN yes you can use a female connector from rat shack. just wire it up with 6 wires 1 to 1. If you'd like a PICTURE of what mine looks like ICQ me or email me
